"I must have garbage headphones cuz nothing bad about the production stood out to me."
it's also because we live in an era marred by dissention and negativity

I can see Mordecai saying that

I have some expensive-ass headphones and the production is really not that bad. People can run it through all the measurements they'd like, a low dynamic range is not inherently bad, the end result is what matters.
I'm pretty sure if it sounds good through my $3000 rig and my little IEMs then it can't be considered "terrible."

People are allowed to dislike/disagree with something and not be labeled as negative 24/7. Let's not make this a Contortionist thread now

I mean I think nice discussion is happening. It's not nearly as offensive as it could be. I think we've all seen worse lol

I actually knew when I made the review there'd be at least a small wave of people just reflexively taking a contrary stance, but I'm pretty pleased with the number of folks with 3.5-4 reviews coming in and just offering good counter-arguments.

depends what you consider to be "wrong" in production i think. there's no clipping like with death magnetic but the limiting is definitely very pumpy and the instruments sound very unnatural as a result

There's some valid criticisms in here like the production and the lack of riffage. Those criticisms are getting exhausted in here. I think the production is average at worst, but I don't produce music. I get it, it just isn't hindering my experience.
The Conscious Seed of Light was a better album in regards to interesting riffs. Also the only RoN album that doesn't have pacing issues IMO. This one and Monarchy lump all of the slower, dirge-y songs at the back of the album.

They don't necessarily sound "natural" but I don't think that detracts from the sound. It doesn't seem like an accident to me and the overall grandiosity of the production ends up working.
I don't agree with the notion that instruments have to sound analog to be "correct." It's all in execution.

Hmmm, i don't think the more synthetic sound works for this one. The overall style of the music is usually not "mechanical" and there's a lot of open space for more ambient atmospherics, so the super plasticky sounding instruments doesn't really feed into that very well.
Honestly the main thing is that I don't actually understand what people like about this album to make it better than the large number of similar prog/tech death albums. It sounds super standard to me outside of the bad production and better than average songwriting structures.
I like Conscious Seed of Light since it feels a bit grittier and the riffs are a lot better, whereas this seems to trade out most of the subtle good things about that for the current genre tropes.
