I aint hatin, its a decent song, just easily my least favorite. I think she said its one of the first songs she ever wrote, and it shows.

"Stay Down and Ketchum, ID are the only tracks I'll be listening to more than once"

Agreed it's not everything I hoped for, but Stay Down into Salt in the Wound is legendary

Oh God the bicycle bells and toy train sounds in the second half of "Scott Street" hit me right where it hurts, what an incredible song.

she has a penchant for writing sad folk music but without having endured the life experience to make it land as genuine. so you get the vague middle class malaise of "jesus christ i'm so blue all the time / and that's just how I feel” delivered with the pretty aroma of a perfume ad

idk, I don't really care about someone's life experience as much as I care about how the music hits me emotionally and how well it's written. In both cases, this one's a winner for me

Agreed with Patterns. I don’t buy the “life experience” argument either. Depression is a very real thing and has nothing to do with how much one’s experienced in life. Granted, I don’t know for sure whether Bridgers actually suffers from depression but I mean, it seems, based on what I’ve read, that a lot of these songs were based on actual experiences she’s had if not being totally autobiographical. The “I’m so blue” line lands as a weak, vague lyric because that’s what it is.

I feel like you couldnt have not experienced depression if youve written some of the songs on this album, theyre pretty telling.

I don’t disagree, I just don’t want to claim she has it without a direct confirmation of such.

The "I'm so blue" line might be vague and weak when you isolate it but it's meant to be taken in the context of the song, and perhaps even the entire record. Nitpicking line by line is a total disservice.

I wasn't taking it out of context though, if you look back a page my original comment referenced it in the context of the song. It works particularly bad in the context of "Funeral" because elsewhere in the song the lyrics are very specific and purposeful and then you get hit with this kind of dumb and hokey "I'm so blue" (which is a phrase that nobody actually uses in real life). It would work if the intention was for it to be ironic but given the context of the song I really don't think it is. It doesn't quite ruin the song but it definitely holds it back a bit.

Also, weird time to butt in, but I kinda agree with Boney that the "I'm so blue" line is weak on its own but I think compounded by the rest of the "all the time, that's just how I feel, always have and I always will," along with her delivery makes it hit hard

Not sure if she has actual diagnosed depression (because I'm not her or her therapist), but it's also possible that she's like me and goes through intense depressive episodes from time to time that are intensified by people close to me suffering from the actual disease. I only say this because I know a lot of other accounts have described her as weirdly sunny compared to her music, which could mean she's acting, or yknow, just isn't feeling depressed at the moment

I think it would be an effective line if it was wielded subversively or ironically. As it stands the pleasing seductiveness of the delivery rubs against the content in an uncomfortable way. I guess that's my issue with all the sad folk here? It's too smooth and charming, I need some grit if you're gonna delve into topics like death and depression.

Either that or you're just ridiculously picky... which is how you seem in every thread I see you in :]

Hm, I don't agree either, but that's a little unfair... Besides, pinpointing what it is you don't like (and, sure, pickiness) is a great way of narrowing in on what you love. It also makes for interesting and thoughtful discussion.

I actually like the "jesus christ, im so blue all the time" part, i find what she follows it up with (and thats just how i feel, always have and always will) to be disappointing.
