That, gym, and carin are the only truly fantastic songs.

It works 100% perfectly as the opener to this album, I will agree on that.
Thing is - the album is really good so that doesn't necessarily equate to it ranking top half.

Day i die, walk it back, beg, empire, and I'll still destroy you are all super weak cuts

I still think Nobody Else is weak as an opener but I have a mini theory that it's supposed to almost work as a transition between Trouble and this.

It does sound the most like a 'Trouble' cut...along with 'Carin'.
'Walk it Back' and the title track are so good on this though, I'll not hear a word against.

My faith is sick and my skin is thin as ever
I need you alone
Goodbyes always take us half an hour
Can't we just go home?

The lyrics are still great but in a more subtle way than before.

'Alligator' was a bit clunky lyrically for me - in that sometimes the vocals stood out too much in an awkward way.
He'd smoothed them to perfection by 'Boxer' though - that was a crazy leap forward in quality all round.

yea sorry listen again, alligator is lyrically unbelievable and completely curb stomps everything on trouble will find me
prolly the best lyrics about the loss of innocence in the average world ever

I prefer to think of their albums as coming in two's rather than trilogies.. Alligator and Boxer fit each other's mood and aesthetics, just as Violet and Trouble do for each other.. to me, Beas is the beginning of a new duo.. Violet and alligator are my personal favourites, though Trouble is probably their strongest all around, but those two click with me perfectly..

Maybe good written on a page, but they frequently sound clumsy musically to my ears, always have since 2005. Doesn't help some of the tunes are muddled on the album too.
I do get that a lot of people absolutely love that album now, if not really at the time. 'Boxer' to me is light years ahead in every department. I don't think I'd switch out a single song from 'Boxer' for an 'Alligator' track. Maybe 'Geese of Beverley Road' at a push?

Alligator obviously pounds this album. Secret meeting alone is better than this whole album
