Asylum sounds like something that could have been written between Stupid Dream and In Absentia, which isn't a negative thing at all. Loving that smooth guitar section every time.

Wilson's vocals have always been terrible. I think they really started to interfere with the music around Stupid Dream but they've never been good

They're not incredible vocals, but have always fit the music well imo. And his harmonies/layers are mind blowing.

They've never been particularly good, but at least they fit what he wanted to express most of the time. That's not the case this time. He admittedly did a nice job on Permanating imo.

Edit: Yes, that too.

it's preposterous to call his vocals terrible

it's just a typical 'I don't like it, so it's terrible'. In the same category as 'I hate this band', because simply not liking something doesn't cut it for those special kind of people.

His lyrics aren't the best and his "speech impediment" is noticeable but aside from that there isn't anything wrong with his vocals imo

"speech impediment?"

Yeah, my thoughts exactly. His speech/singing enunciation sounds "normal" to me.

His singing has never been less than competent, and his performance very emotional plenty of times. Most of the time, as many have said already, it's just solid. Can't change the voice you're born with.

I am not the biggest fan of this guy's work, but I always thought he had a nice voice

Like, it's not like he can't sing. His vocals are terrible because they're completely monotone and emotionless. Yeah, he always sings the right notes, but he sings them like a computer.

Disagreed, he sings with plenty of emotion when it calls for it on many of his songs like Raven, Drive Home, Happy Returns, Lazarus, Lips of Ashes, and tons of others.

People seem to hear want to hear i think.

His vocals are great IMO, this album no exception.

For people dissing vocals in Asylum, fair enough but actually the second verse with the deeper backing sounds great i think, its just the first verse. Thats less than 20% of the song. So surely theres more to the song than just that.
