I think the rating will grow for me as well, I love FJM, just think this is a tad bit dense and really does need more variety, but maybe in the long term that'll be a good thing for this record.

What helped me settle on a rating was rating each song track by track on RYM during a listen, which revealed just how consistent this is (average track rating: 3.88). Track scores aren't everything of course and the length knocks it a little bit but I'm still enjoying it more and more with every go.
On a side note, I also rated Honeybear track by track, and my scores were high enough to convince me to 5 it again.

I completely agree Boney, each song is fantastic, but as a record it gets redundant and draining. I can love dramas in film, but a 3 hour film of just pure dialogue with very little else can even drive the most passionate film goer away.

I think there's actually a fair bit of variety once you settle into the subdued palette

Agreed on that Doof, nonetheless it's still a bit too long. I'm glad that it's long more because of there being some long tracks as opposed to a bloated track listing though.
I'm really loving "Ballad of the Dying Man":
Oh in no time at all, this will be the distant past...

A Bigger Paper Bag is gorgeous.

Why isn't this trending? Because people are giving it low ratings?
|
| |
Album Rating: 5.0
I think it's because the trending algorithm is based off of how many rating something has in a given set of time. A bulk of the ratings for this were spread out between the initial leak and now, with a slight spike the past 5 days, but I don't think there's been any one day where this has received a dramatic amount of ratings.

Maybe because the site's been down all weekend, boney?

this went from a 3 to a 4 for me and I'm feeling pretty convince on it. total entertainment forever is still my favorite cut by far

Total Entertainment Forever is one of my least favorites. :-/ It's sort of like a weaker version of Chateau Lobby #4. It even fulfills a similar purpose as the second song on the album.

chateau lobby #4 is also my favorite song from honeybear. I feel like he has the same way of setting up all his albums

Think it's like a less obviously gratifying version of Chateau Lobby...in fact the whole album is like a purposefully less obviously gratifying version of Honeybear. You have to work for your supper this time.
The lyrics and concept of Total Entertainment makes it one of my favourites, top 5 or 6 for me

It's lyrics are good, I'm not a huge fan of "Not bad for a race of demented monkeys" but I like the rest. Either way even if it's one of the weaker songs it's essential for the variety it brings to the mix.
Certainly the whole album is not as gratifying as Honeybear, agreed.

"I think there's actually a fair bit of variety once you settle into the subdued palette."
Agree with this. Some of FJM's most interesting vocal melodies are on here. Together with the lyrics makes for plenty of poignant moments.
Total Entertainment Forever is a big tune. The long songs are sort of tiresome but Smoochie is the only track that's an actual dud for me atm

It's one of the more single appropriate tracks on the record, one of the very few upbeat and grandiose tunes on the album.

Total Entertainment Forever is great, but my favorite song is Things It Would Have Been Helpful To Know Before The War. There are a couple of others on my radar too . . . For an album that I initially thought I'd be editing down by 50%, I'm enjoying almost all of it now. If I could change one thing, I'd drop the last song (In Twenty Years Or So). The one before it (So I'm Growing Old On Magic Mountain) closes the album very nicely for me.
