I'm with you on this, I cannot help but think of 'Maudlin' as referring to a person in this context, most likely a female, which is possibly because it's a bit like the name 'Maude'. Now, I was almost certain this wasn't the intention and Johnny's explanation sounds a lot more feasible, but my brain still conjures up images of an old hag (maybe a witch) taking residence at the bottom of a well.
