Just listened to this again - sorry I was right first time, for me this is a 1. Reapers, Mercy and Revolt stood out as particularly awful on a second spin but every single song sucks.

Doofus that's funny because those are three of my favorites.
By far their best album since Black Holes. The last couple albums were very scattered, with too many competing influences and ideas. Drones is extremely focused, with a very consistent idea and sound. Doesn't hurt that they've got some of their best riffs in years on this one too. I don't understand the hate, because it's completely unwarranted.

^I can definitely understand not liking "Reapers" - musically I think it's fantastic, but the lyrics are kinda bunk and the vocals can get irritating in places.
I'm pretty sure the love for "Defector" is based solely on its solos

OOS, Absolution and BHAR are way behind them now but this record does at least sound like they know how to have fun with their process and strip back SOME of the pretentious - it does at the very least give me higher hopes for the next record.

this is pretty bad. "drones" is beautiful. i've never been into this band though. pretty sure "psycho" sounds identical to one of their other songs.
