Sound stages are also more evident on vinyl. There's psychical space in the instrumentation whereas with MP3s all of the instruments are essentially planted on top of one another.

lol what
that entirely depends on the mixing not the format it's being played on

To be honest though, I haven't listened to a vinyl in twenty years probably. One of my buddies was telling me about his father in law's sound system and said the sound was huge. stuff coming at him from all over.

It was demonstrated that the human ear can't get the difference between CD and Vinyl, it's a placebo.

Oh, I have vinyl too, but the 16/44'100 quality is good enough for me. (Even mp3 @320kbs are good, imo, a lot of people can't distinguish them from CD)

he's talking about the depth and breathing between the instruments......and it is true to a certain extent......i agree with the joy of record collecting though, it definitely makes for a better experience like another poster mentioned on the previous page.......supporting the artists as well

Thank you, Titan. I felt like I'd time warped into the 80s where slick marketers were hailing the revolution of compact discs.

It's only a placebo if you haven't actually heard a good, analog sound setup. If you've been listening to 128kbps mp3s and 20 dollar speakers you bought from a pharmacy hooked up to a turntable, then, sure, you're probably not going to notice anything substantial. The difference between mp3s and a decent analog setup is night and day, and if you can't hear the difference its likely because a.) you don't want to hear the difference or b.) you don't know what to listen for.

As opposed to the slick marketers in 2016 that tell you than vinyl is inherently superior?

That's not a like comparison because vinyl actually does sound better if pressed properly with a good analog recording.

@Underflow: a lot of tests in double blind were conducted, and the listeners have never told with accuracy if they were listening vynil or CD. Try with a friend which put on the same album on CD and Vinyl, no one can tell the difference without knowing it first.

Sorry but a CD on a 15 years old but well kept stereo is not a MP3 @128Kbs on 20 dollars speakers.

CDs sound more trebly than proper analog recordings. Cds have less depth in the space bewtween instruments. CDs do, however, have better high and lows than vinyl, which sounds best in the mid ranges, so I'll grant you that. Note decay is also more natural on a vinyl recording. I think part of the issue some of you might be having is that some vinyl pressings these days are made from digital - not from analog. Digital recordings aren't going to capture the depth of analog, so that's why you may not think there's a difference. But a sound engineer worth his salt could absolutely tell the difference between an analog vinyl recording and a CD of the same album.

The reason that giving a friend a CD and vinyl of the same album isn't a valid illustration that one is better than the other is because most people don't know enough about sound recording to note anything substantial. Not because it doesn't exist.

I heard the story of the difference between analog and digital pressing too.

I didn't mean to do the test at your friend, but to call your friend to switch from one to other, without you knowing which is which. I'm sure you can't tell the difference.

I've never personally tried that, but I'm sure you know what I think would happen haha. All I know is from my own personal experiences of listening to album's I love on both formats, and I've always noticed a difference.

Last thing: a lot of listeners say that the vinyl has a warmer sound, but they actually get confused with the background noise of the stylus.
