Best? This confuses me. Maybe one day I'll understand, who knows.
I don't see it as being on the same level as The Mantle or particularly AATG. It's different enough stylistically though, so guess it's just a matter of preference.

Cool, fair enough. Do you like 'Marrow' Aiwaz? That one is my least favourite so far (haven't yet heard the latest one).

"Best vox best riffs best album art best lyrics"
This has got to be their worst album cover though and their lyrics def improved over time

Serpent is easily their worst imo. Marrow rules though. I even like it more than this. The Mantle is my favorite, unsurprisingly

I'd say Marrow is easily their worst and would take Serpent over this

I'm intrigued by 'Serpent' because the average is bizarrely low for an Agalloch album. I want to let Marrow sink in first though, maybe it's a grower. I do like Marrow but certain sections meander a little too much for my liking.

I think having a negative review come from a well respected staff member so early on really set up the community here to have negative preconceptions about that album. It seems to have been decently well reviewed just about everywhere else

Do you think that would make a difference long-term? It's got a bunch of negative reviews now & a paltry average from over 500 listeners. I can see why it might've changed initial perceptions early on.

I think to extent it does. Wouldn't be surprised if an analysis of ratings showed that the earlier ones are generally lower than the ones that came later on (and thus would be dragging down the average). Also, the generally more negative response may have deterred some users from the checking out the album

Never forget that 2.5 review rating on Marrow.

Agreed, Scream. I think the userbase has a very "follow the leader" mentality regarding staff reviews. Serpent is their weakest album, but I still think it's really good.

Crysis is one of those reviewers whose ratings I just don't trust on principle at this point. He's a good writer, but he gives so many unjustified low ratings to great albums.

"Never forget that 2.5 review rating on Marrow."
Also the first agalloch album to never reach 4 avg.
Coincidence? Who knows
