This one took a while to grow on me, but it was more than worth it.

I adored this from the first listen tbh, but maybe that's just me.
I actually love all the hate this gets because FJM was definitely baiting people to hate it, to an extent. It takes a certain sense of irony to fully appreciate this. (Though I don't see why people have issues with the instrumentals; I think the album is excellently arranged.)

To be quite honest, I'm unsure of why it took so long to click with me. In retrospect, I'm unable to pinpoint what it is that I didn't adore about it. But perhaps I never bought into the character as much as I do now; it likely had something to do with the mood I was in when listening, but I think it's immensely interesting now.
And yeah, instrumental-wise I had no big issues.

It took a while to click with me as well. The persona that he puts on with his lyrics is so ridiculous and over-the-top and all over the place, which kind of necessitates listening to the album several times before you really understand what he's going for.
It takes a little while to parse out what is heartfelt, what is sarcastic, when he's just trying to fuck with the listener, etc.

I'm seeing him in concert in a couple months. To anyone here who has seen him perform: what's he like live?
I'm imagining a lot of smartass banter directed towards the audience.
My more pressing question is, does he actually have all of the instruments from the album (like the horns from Chateau, the strings from Bored in the USA)? It seems like he would have to bring a lot of people with him on tour in order to include all of the instrumentals on the album.

Have fun at the concert, dude. From the few videos I've seen of him performing live, I haven't seen a string section backing him, but you can hope.
Just got my vinyl, though, and the packaging is pretty awesome.

A whole string section would obviously be a hell of a lot to ask for a guy of FJM's popularity level. I was hoping there would at least be one or two people playing strings, though

Saw him last night, and my prediction came true. He demanded everyone stand for the duration of his performance (it was an in auditorium), and he put some dumbass who yelled out "Free Bird" on blast.
Fucking incredible show though. They played for two hours, almost every song from both albums. He has an insane amount of energy.

True Affection is a great song whether it's meant to sound dumb or not. Doesn't sound like Sufjan tho just cos it's a folkie-gone-electro
