Well?

Are you saying you want me to go into why I dislike the instrumentation, vocal delivery and overall style of FOABP?

Is it the chugga chugga? I wouldn't blame you if that was the reason.

the chugga-chugga in FOABP is the reason I love this album (kiddin', though I really like the more metal style they adopted)

First four songs on Blank Planet are among the band's best, the last two are good too. The lyrics overall have to be viewed in context with the album's concept obviously, and they're very likely meant to be tongue-in-cheek.

The more I listen to this band and discover their unreleased 90s material, the more I grow to really love their psychedelic era. TSMS might become my favorite PT record eventually.

TSMS is lovely indeed. "Moonloop" blows me away every time.

"This one took me the most to appreciate."

A bit strange if you ask me, this one seems the most accessible of theirs.

TSMS is magnifiscent.

Sleep Together is a really weird song, but the ending is excellent. Also, Way out of Here is a song you can really appreciate if you listen the live version. The lyrics are truly haunting if you know the story behind it and some lyrics hit me like a truck (e.g. And I'm trying to forget you/And I know that I will / In a thousand years or maybe a week)

"Is it the chugga chugga? I wouldn't blame you if that was the reason."

It's everything. The "chugga chugga" does epitomise the generic-ness of the instrumentation though. If the instrumentation was somewhat interesting then maybe it would make up for the terrible song writing (not just talking lyrics) but no, there are literally no redeeming qualities for FOABP, I despise everything about it.

the video of that song is just hilariously terrible, makes the lyrics seem even worse

LOL. I could understand many complaints about Fear... but generic instrumentation, really? Have you even heard the album? The many, many different sounds of guitars alone make this album's instrumentation non-generic, and there are also the dark ambient interludes, the weird pulse that bridges parts 2 and 3 of "Anesthetize", the gradually-less-muffled "Sentimental", and of course, the electronic-meets-symphonic-meets-metal of "Sleep Together".

Or do you just mean that instrumentation is generic because there are "only" drums, guitars and synths, even though they wear so many different faces on the album? But then you'd have to say most rock bands have generic instrumentation...

Have you heard other albums of that style? There is literally nothing that makes the instrumentation on FOABP stand out. Everything you mentioned is far from unusual. There might be some interesting ideas in terms of production that you touched on but even that's stretching it.

I'm curious Jamie, give me some recs.

Thanks Artuma, can't stop listening to them

Well it's a genre/style I hate so it's difficult to give "recs". But bands like Gazpacho have had more interesting instrumentation, minus the painfully generic metal elements that FOABP suffers from.
