Yeah, I mean half of the album is pretty great and half is excessive wankery so a 3 fits perfectly. It's also the opposite of a grower since I liked it less upon each listen...
The way that "H." ruins itself at the end still makes me mad.
What also makes me mad is that it's obvious that is Tool stopped being so pretentious and dropped the whole "prog metal" attempt and instead made some regular alt. metal, they're probably be amazing.
Which is why "Hooker with a Penis" and "Aenema" are great songs. No excess prog metal bullshit.
Not that anything is wrong with prog metal, it's just that Tool is bad at it...

Exactly, when I look at other alt. metal bands like Faith No More and Primus I see creative, crazy and experimental leanings that really attract me toward them.
Or even Rage Against the Machine's political vibe.
Or all three's dabbling in funk metal.
I get none of this from Tool, so I don't know... they're kind of boring in comparison. At least I think so.

Primus is technical, diverse, and silly. Being silly doesn't necessarily mean it's brainless.
Often I really like silliy artists because it's a good contrast to the huge amount of artists who take their music way too seriously. Plus when a normally silly artist writes something serious they actually seem to have someone to say that's interesting or makes you think. ie. "Too Many Puppies"

no it's not brainless because it's 'silly' it's brainless because it's music with no other point than to be that way. it's so fucking uninteresting because it's just a band fucking around, not even trying to make anything cohesive or unique, and then idiots will be like OH WOW THIS SURE IS WEIRD HAHAHA when literally that's like the only quality that makes that music what it is, it's so shallow and ugh just lifeless. and just because a band doesn't take themselves seriously doesn't make them good. there are plenty of bands that don't take themselves seriously and are great but because they write interesting music instead of just doing the same trick over and over.
