the production is amazing and I think it’s their most cohesive song in terms of lyrics + melody + arrangement all coming together. having actual vocals goes a long way for them

if you wanna compare it to other soppy saccharine whateverpop, then i'm sure that being a 'cohesive' "song" in terms of lyrics + melody + arrangement w/ actual vocals is a big deal

but it doesn't make for a relevant point of direct comparison to what makes the great bits here great does it now mhmm

"And let's be real, the Avalanches are for bangers more than fakemovie binges"

I'd say that is true for their other albums but this one is a banger in its entirity

no my point is that it's cohesive relative to other Avalanches songs which often feel fragmented in a way that prevents them from conveying the emotion they try to convey

bets on where the issue lies here

option #1: all other Avalanches songs for not being good enough

option #2: colton confusing his anemic disposition for bland verse/chorus production showcases for an artist conveying emotion

hmmmm

ngl I thought we were on the thread for the new one but that album definitely tries to be sentimental and uplifting in a grandiose sorta over the top way that it sometimes falls short of because of the aforementioned fragmentedness of the vocals

the real issue lies in the fact that your distaste for any music that even slightly reflects an actual living human soul blinds you to the manner in which a stylistic departure like The Divine Chord exemplifies a different affectation than say a voice clip of a man saying "that boy needs therapy" 47 times

hmm disageed johnny, i actually think this one is the better journey album, while the new one is more impressive on a song-song basis. i don't remember that many tracks here regularly (maybe t/t, radio & frontier). new one has a lot more highlights for me

I think the nub of this is that new one is more distinguishable on a song-by-song basis, which ties into its journey having a clearer and more ambitious emotional progression than this one's, which is maybe maybe more impressive if you like feelings etc (if what I was driving at)

but almost none of those tracks are as pretty as Electricity/Tonight or bop as hard as Radio/A Different Feeling so was it rly worth it

I just listened to this for the first time today. I’m not sure what to rate it, but it was awesome. I can see why it’s so acclaimed.

Man I keep waiting for this to grow on me and it kind of isn't, some parts have even gotten a little grating with time. Lots to love ofc but for me it's an easy kill if we're FMK'ing the big three plunderphonicses (this endtro donuts (right???))

This isn't plunderphonics. Neither is endtro or donuts. It's probably rym's fault that people think the genre is merely sample heavy instrumental music now. In the past the term sampledelia (or sampledelica) was thrown around for the hip hop related sample stuff (Paul's Boutique, SILY)

Examples of actual plunderphonics would be:

John Oswald - Plunderphonic
John Oswald - Plexure
Negativland - Dispepsi
Negativland - U2

Nice um-actually dude you're so smart for mentally treating plunderphonics sampledelia and turntablism as separate things with no overlap
