Alas, I have not heard the surround version. I have the 14-track cd - think it's a reissue but not sure which one. My mate owns the remastered boxset, which he kindly lent to me, and I did not like how it sounded in comparison to what I've got.
Not sure what you mean by "pretending to be dynamic". I originally did not enjoy it much but as I gave it more time I realised how cool and intricate the song structures are and how well different passages, which upon first listen just blend into one, transit into each other.
Granted, it's not as punchy as Night but that's because it was never intended to be that way.

I meant dynamic mastering-wise. It sounds really crisp and clean even though when you get down to it it's only slightly above average for compression.
To be clear, this is mine: https://www.discogs.com/it/Katatonia-The-Great-Cold-Distance/release/9791390
It's actually not the first time they did something fancy with a DVD, though the past one doesn't have a great reputation apparently (the edition with the negative colored artwork).
And I do agree about the actual music, the drumming is especially great I'd say. Look I'll even bump my rating a bit though I'm thinking of disowning these bastard children.

Yes, that's the one I borrowed although I was not aware the fourth disc had the 5.1 version of the album. Dang.
You don't have to raise the rating, I was just asking why you didn't like it, which was especially weird given that you listed Night as one of your favourites.

Certainly one of the finest alt metal albums ever made

No no, I do have to raise it haha, I haven't rated anything since 2018.
It's not really that I dislike it but rather that I don't like it as much as others. It just strikes as more alt metally than what came after; I love the quiet parts but I'm not always too hot on the "mandatory" heavy choruses. But really as I was saying I'm warming up to it and I do believe in the "3.5 does mean great" philosophy

Last Fair Deal Gone Down is also very, very good if you haven't heard it.

The 10th anniversary version is also available on Spotify along with the standard master, at least in my region. They should have done a more dynamic stereo CD for the NITND 10th anniversary edition, too... It was a nice little treat for the few that care.

Never bought the NITND anniversary because it appears they didn't remaster it. I'd be curious to hear the DVD but I'm not betting €50 just on a housemade downmix.
Love LFDGD, binged it on a sad period and got scarred. Recommend

Given how a lot of those surround bonus DVDs actually are, I understand your worry. That's why I didn't rush to buy it despite owning the set for TGCD.
I'll eventually get the vinyl for the red colour and alternate cover and because it has "Ashen" in the main tracklist before the closer. Only the vinyl and the Swedish Digibook have it like that.

Yeah that's a nice touch, it's cool when the bonus stuff looks reasoned.
btw I bit the bullet and bought this album's 10th anniversary digital edition from 7digital. It contains the 19 tracks from the book's CDs and indeed it's not the same master as them. Some tracks sound close but as a whole it's better! It was €12.49, absolutely worth it imo. You could jam even Leaders as loud as you can stand with no harshness to fear.
(Numbers-wise my downmix has slightly higher dynamics but the mix isn't as perfect as a genuine stereo release obviously)

I will go ahead and trust your words and buy it.

The new master (different master?) does improve it overall.

I assume the 10th anniversary edition on Spotify is based on the 7digital version considering it has the same tracklist, while the earbook separates the main album from the bonus due to the CD limitations.

It'd make sense, they even share the same weird ` apostrophe.
That's it I'm making peace with this record, this sweet lossless b1tch is going straight into my phone.

Yeah, I've mostly played this version (or rather, these two). I should jam the Plovdiv live disc more too.

Yep, like viva with a tighter production and less cringe lyrics

The 2013 Viva Emptiness sounds tight, but the lyrics remain.
