Gave it another listen this morning and I'm considering lowering this to a 2.5. It just struck me how much this is a product of its time, the fast singing and staccato riffs give this a nu-metal sheen which just doesn't work for me. So glad they almost immediately went into a new direction after this. Seems fairly evident this one was a collection of songs they'd written for many years prior.

Seriously though, to each their own but I love this vibe. The evolution into the sound of the next album is interesting - I'll say that C.O.T.E. could easily fit on Sound Awake and vice versa, All I Know wouldn't feel out of place here.

Someone said recently that this beats In Verses.. let's just say HARDDDDDD disagree>
This sounds like any number of Nu-metal adjacent bands I listened to in the late 2000s early 2010s. Not bad but not special by any means.
Their next album showed tremendous growth, containing their (IMO) best song ever (New Day). Yet, IV is still their best record.

I disagree primarily because this is quite an unique record considering its stylistic palette. On how many nu metal albums can you hear symphonic, ambient, swing and Meshuggah influences used next to each other, skilfully on top of that?
One reason why I find this superior to IV is because at no point does IV provoke an emotional reaction in me remotely as strong as this does. That, plus the matter of diversity, memorability etc. IV loses in every respect with every other LP by the band.
