This is way too similar to Puritanica, and Puritanica is awesome, but this doesn't do much to stand out from it.

Don't agree. Puritanical had the strings only, which was amazing and intense. This one approaches it wholly differently with a full orchestra, so it's way more bombastic and biblical. Plus the whole feel is different: Puritanical had that robotic feel, whereas this one feels more like a story, more alive in a way.

I'm not saying either one is better than the other, but I don't think they're way too similar at all.

You make solid points. I'm not that well versed in black metal so a more trained ear than mine can probably pick up on the nuances in the genre.

i feel like a full orchestra vs strings only isn't a really significant difference between the albums, they are definitely quite similar. not that that is in and of itself a problem, i'd say the bigger problem with these pairs of albums are that they sound a bit too polished and don't have the atmosphere and nuance that earlier dummy burger albums had. i found them kind of dull, killed my interest in the band but i found them to be more of a gateway band anyway. dimmu borgir got me into black metal but they did not stick around for long, outside of in death's embrace. that song is just too damn good.

Dude! Strings only versus a full orchestra is like two different genres of music entirely! Chamber and Orchestral music! But even next to that I mentioned more differences, for instance the robotic vs. the biblical feel of PEM / DCA respectively. Of course there are many similarities as well, but their feel is totally different to me and their approach differs significantly as well.

Regardless of whether you like them or not, there's still that.

For more orchestral goodness, check out Codex Omega by Septicflesh.

And learn to like Eonian, so I'm not alone.

Trif nailed it. PEM is more electronic, this is orchestral. Also the metallic elements are way different. This album has some of the best and most intricate guitar work. It's not overly flashy, but more of a subtle technicality. Shagrath sounds amazing and the production rules. It's polished but at the same time gives the album a very grey feel, if that makes sense? I feel like the vibe of the music paired very well with the album/booklet artwork.
