Nice. Based on that, I’m gonna venture a guess that you’ll prefer this to their debut then. (Because the debut is quite a bit more…”experimental”.) But I do hope you eventually check it anyway; you might surprise me like Demon and prefer it. (And it IS amazing, too; this just happens to be one of my favorite things ever.)

I love the structure of that song. Def forward thinking in so many ways

in my heart of hearts “debut is better” is one of the more untenable “common”-ish takes I see with an album like this
I mean this insofar as Deceit is way, way better than This Heat. This Heat is fun freaky n forward thinking but they absolutely leveled up here

very few tracks on here evoke emotion in me like the same kind of cold uneasiness that s/t stirs in the pit of my stomach (on the instances when it REALLY hits). there's just something so primal and threatening about it that's genius
this certainly was groundbreaking but some part of me was/is disappointed by it. feels like it's got more meat and quirk to it but less substance and focus

I'll take the lower, having said that the first para is indeed proper based.

I don’t necessarily agree that arguing s/t is better is totally untenable quite like robertson, but calling this less focused seems a bit disingenuous. The whole album is built around fear, panic, dread, anxiety, et al and I think it nails that tone perfectly. Agreed that s/t might be more blatantly “atmospheric” (by design) but i wouldn’t say it’s any more or less focused or substantive than this. Different, sure, and different people have different preferences obviously.

'I don’t necessarily agree that arguing s/t is better is totally untenable quite like robertson'
Woah, I didn't even notice that, I must've 'auto-filtered' right past his comment under the assumption it contained numerous untenable opinions.
I also don't think this is unfocused or lacking in atmosphere, although perhaps how much the individual connects with it depends on how susceptible one is to anxiety-ridden post-punk with a bit of punch vs abstract avant-kraut-drone(?!) with tape loops and other experimental weirdness. And I think that's what you're saying, they are very different releases despite some vague similarities in general tone.
I find the s/t way easier to get lost in, hence my preference.

Had a surreal experience with this album. Insane stuff, especially for 1981. Having a hard time wrapping my head around the fact this existed during that time period and that its 40 years old now.
Never explored this beyond Paper Hats, but I'm glad I finally did. Checking their self titled now and this is sounding even more intense.
