For me it just conjures really awesome imagery, and the album art definitely helps with that (looks to me like it's a red sky and a snowy field). Voice of the Devil is a top 3 Ulver song for me, along with EOS and Not Saved.

Never mind, I had a nightmare that the Norwegian National Opera performance of EOS was being beamed directly into my head at 5x max volume. I woke up with COVID. I hate that song now, lol

Started reading Wolves Evolve, and Rygg says that both this and Kveldssanger are the two Ulver albums he's least happy with, or at least feels he didn't fully accomplish what he intended with them. For this one, it's that many of the individual parts are good, but the whole thing doesn't feel cohesive. Flipped ahead to the interviews with Ylwizaker (RIP) and found that he agreed.

@JohnnyoftheWell - Still going through it, though he did remark that he considers Blood Inside one of their key works, is very fond of Shadows and thought that would've been a good swansong had they called it quits then, and doesn't consider Wars of the Roses -- which had the working title "Critical Geography" -- one of the band's proudest moments (Svaeren concurs with much of this). WotR was their first "let's just make a record" album, according to him, whereas every album before had sort of a specific direction.

And yeah, definitely a great read.

interesting — agree with him on all those takes and defs feel Roses is one of their least focused/overall underwhelming records. glad he's proud of BI
