Been jamming this a lot lately, still fantastic. I think this is finally starting to knock The Odyssey off the 3rd-place spot for me, as far as the discog ranking goes

V is probably my least favorite of the band's Divine Wings - Paradise Lost period, but still a really good album. They could do no wrong during that era, and even then, Iconoclast and Underworld are no slouches either

Ehh if I revisited Underworld, I wouldn't be surprised if I dropped it. It just feels kinda dry in comparison to past works and what they're capable of. Iconoclast for all its faults still had some bangers, Underworld is just kinda... there. Nothing bad, but nothing that stands out.

I actually prefer Underworld to Iconoclast, if only slightly. I enjoy both of them just fine, but I prefer SX at their most neoclassical and proggy... to me, the band started leaning a bit too hard into the metal side with those last few records

Yeah they lost the 'fantasy' element which made them so special for me. Paradise Lost is so good at what it does that I'm still down for the ride but after...yeah.

Iconoclast at least had the sci-fi backdrop of sorts, which the heavier direction could kinda support? Underworld really doesn't have anything in that regard.

To be fair, I'd say the Dante's Inferno inspiration for Underworld also facilitates a darker, heavier direction (just as it did for Iced Earth). Iconoclast does have the sci-fi theme, but even that seems kinda... idk, un-Symphony X to me

Oh it's different for sure. And I guess I just didn't detect that vibe, felt very same-old same-old. Safe, which may be way it worked in the context of the more divisive Iconoclast.

Iconoclast's problem wasn't the sci fi ideas per se, it's that half of the songs are plodding mid tempo bastards and eh lyrics. But it does have four insane songs.

Yeah, and they kinda overdose on heaviness to where everything kinda feels too mushy for my taste.
