My main man BJ is overestimating the similarity a bit but you can hear some parallel in them deep vocals and crazy-ass lyrics for sure. Check Let Love In

The National and Nick Cave share similar aesthetics, but as for how they actually sound, they're pretty different i think
"kinda like their newest album after a few listens"
that's cool to hear, considering there's a lot of people that love the other three that don't love that one for some reason

@futures nick cave experiments a little here and there and keeps things fresh. Also he has a far more interesting voice.
The vocalist of the national is clearly the better singer but hes not that engaging to me, at least not after those few listens. Also the music is nice and good and all but overall a little bit uneventful in my humble op.
Their music is overall pretty different but you started the topic haha

I've got some sympathy for flug here, I owned Alligator for a year and had it pegged as 'middle hitter indie' before Boxer then came out and floored me. Sure retrospectively Alligator went up a little in my estimation but it took me a while to get into the band too

Yeah im not into Indie music at all, doesnt matter if pop, rock, folk or whatever

Yeah I get this, it took me a while too, but now they're my favorite band. And I think the reason why they're my favorite is because the "events" in their songs happen so subtly that once they finally hit you, they hit you that much harder. Moments like: when the first verse kicks in in Terrible Love, the second chorus in Little Faith, the last verse of Afraid of Everyone, etc. They kind of slide by at first, but with a few listens you realize what's really going on. I mean, I know you can say that about a lot of bands, but the way The National does it is particularly affecting, I think. I don't mean to be a fanboy or anything, I just like taking the opportunity to usher in new listeners haha

Nothing wrong with being a National fanboy tbh

You could honestly shuffle the ranking of their past 4 albums and I could prob agree with the outcome.

Bye Sowing
Jk of course, but that one is just barely below this one in my mind. Actually if you flip your ranking of the last four but keep HV at the top that's my ranking.

Boxer was my first exposure to The National. High Violet was their first record I deeply anticipated and played on repeat nonstop on the day it came out and for the following months. Trouble Will Find Me dropped at a time where I was very little into music and helped get me back on here and more in touch with newer releases. That being said:
Boxer
High Violet
Trouble Will Find Me
Alligator

I heard Apartment Story as a standalone track for my first National experience; HV was my first full album with them. Then I backtracked and listened to Alligator (which I adored), then Boxer (not so much), then TWFM, which I found to be incredibly emotional and relatable at the time.

The only reason High Violet is last with me is cause it's the one I've listened to least. Still a great album though

Apartment Story is my favorite National song, I love Alligator as well, that record just touches a few less personal chords with me than their more recent records.

Their last four are all just such great mood albums - if you're in the right mindset, they're all essentially perfect. However, I generally find I prefer HV and Boxer the most because they are perfect regardless of mood. Alligator and TWFM are obviously great all the time too - I just return to them less frequently.
