"Wait is that one generally considered sub-par? "
Don't think so, but I rarely see folks holding it as a highlight :[ Widower is v good but the last 20 seconds are a joke and kinda ruin the whole song

" i wouldn't if you couldn't'' has such a good lyrics. it's a powerful critique against any form of belief in the 'non-existente' but without being pretentious
''What do you think we're gonna do?
You are the ones who build up walls around yourselves
To shield your lives from fear
When faced with divinity
Do you all pay all your dues?
Or do you refuse?
If there was no consequence
Could you stay inside the lines?
Leave your guilt behind?''

I just listened to this again to remind me, but it’s just a completely normal outro?

"I just listened to this again to remind me, but it’s just a completely normal outro?"
Friendly reminder that you're not talking to someone with sensible opinions on song structure.

Songwriting for accident kids 101: if you shoot for a chamber track on your fiesty fiesty mathcore ballbuster and manage to wrap up the genre interplay remarkably tastefully from start to finish, do not throw in a freight train coda that reprises your emotional climax for no additional impact just when things were wrapped up perfectly
Shit's like if Baba O'Reilly faded out as per form only to turn back up again for the extra double time mantra of teenage wasteland that literally no one had asked for. Really confusingly bad writing in an otherwise impeccable song

Dillinger are one of the last bands I’d be applying anything ‘101’ to. The way you initially described it, I thought I’d misremembered some ridiculous sample or something, when it’s just the band bringing back an earlier motif in a slightly different way.

it's a completely tasteless decision that goes against everything the song has built up and resolved til that moment. rest of the song, and the band's discog, has a lot of great lessons in incorporating sporadic or unpredictable shifts that benefit a clear songwriting vision. that outro is just masturbatory and dumb.

yeah, Widower kinda sucks - album rules otherwise, agreed.
|
| |
It’s a fairly bland outro, if anything. You have an extremely strange definition of ‘masturbatory’.

Farewell, Mona Lisa is still probably the best opener in the history of music.

Honestly this albums amazing and to me is a good Dillinger 101 for people. It has elements of everything they have done and what to expect on a discography dive
