Rereading and this makes some classic faux-pas when it comes to technical description but...
"Take The Funeral Portrait. Its opening riff, reminiscent of Dream Theater, drags out, going on and on and on, while the rest of the song almost sounds like a well rehearsed jam, rather than a self contained piece of music.
...having not jammed this in full in basically forever, I had literally forgotten that song existed.

Interesting, I find some of the proggy riffs kind of annoying, particualrly the first section. It has some great bits though.

"Interesting, I find some of the proggy riffs a kind of annoying"
This sentence is essentially a microcosm of everything I have to say about this band's fanbase.

Always loved the song, the opening riff is the album's best behind the title track imo

"LOL what?"
I don't know, it's just that the idea of an Opeth fan being put off by prog metal riffs just doesn't seem too far-fetched to me.
