>Pika seems to be in a lot of threads where he has the release in question rated 1/5. Lots of high ratings, lots of low ratings, very visible and unyielding. One might say he could come across as troll-like (sorry Pika, but it does sometimes look that way in certain threads).
This is a good little bit of pasta we can use in many threads.

Outright trolling is pretty rare here, partly because the site doesn't allow people to 1 or 1.5 classic albums and a 2 doesn't have anywhere near as much impact pissing people off. If not for that rule there would probably be a fair few idiots giving Abbey Road and Wish You Were Here a 1 to try to start a ruckus. Pika isn't generally a troll except when Tool and Brand New are concerned. I did the same to a Linkin Park thread where people were saying that their debut is a 5 star classic, which I just can't take seriously at all. Didn't give that a 1 though, it's probably a 2.5 or something but definitely no classic.

I feel like negatively rating albums outside of genres that you enjoy is nonsensical

How so? If I listen to an album and don't like it, I don't like it. I'm more careful to write something off if I'm not familiar with its tone/don't feel like I get what it was going for, but that's about it. Not going to shy away from giving an album what I feel it deserves. In turn, only rating albums in a selected pools of genres you enjoy is much more nonsensical.

Yeah that's a good question. If I listen to a country album, but I don't like country, I'm not gonna go slap a 1 on it. I feel like that 1 doesn't represent the album and contributes very little to anything other than reaffirming that I don't like country.

I think it comes down to rating something I might not understand. If I don't understand it and its appeal, how could I feel qualified to rate it?

I don't generally rate albums from genres I don't listen to either. I didn't even rate that Linkin Park album, though I do listen to enough mainstream rock to know that it sure as hell isn't a 5.

Agreed DungeonBoy, I find it hard to rate ambient/drone/experimental releases, cause I'm really unfamiliar to the genre and just feel like I don't understand the music so to say. I would however be able to slap a 1 on a bad djent record with no doubt whatsoever

Sure, but then your pie chart won't look sweet

As far as I know, the pie chart is mainly calculated by 5s. So it wouldn't make a difference.

Bear drone and ambient are awesome but they are kinda hard to get into.

Yeah I know, I just find the genre a little too boring to put time into it, rather listen to things I know I'll enjoy

It was only three years ago when I was convinced by lack of understanding for country and folk was actually me disliking said genres, or just my preferences.
It was all just a lack of exposure. For some people it is pop music that is foreign and challenging, not drone and noise.
