Yeah, this took a while to hit top form for me. It was always good but it improved exponentially after a fair few listens.

My personal favorite is ATF, recently my opinions have shifted a bit. I'd say JD and AWLWLB are tied for second.

JD is a 5 for me & then I've got several on 4.5... ATF, this, PTES & YFM Redux, exact order keeps changing.
Such a consistent discography!

this is way better than jane doe. that album is pretty great, but incredibly homogeneous. there's a lot of juicy variety here, and their sludge stuff is their best stuff.

you can tell the songs apart well enough, but still it all bleeds together.

I can see what you mean. I don't think the album suffers as a result, feels really cohesive to me, but when you start comparing albums from 20 years apart all the variables come into play.

it's an excellent record, it's just one of their harder ones to sit through. i think axe, this, and you fail me are all much more enjoyable. yfm and axe because of brevity and atmosphere; the latter is far more varied, but yfm has a very unique aesthetic. conversely, this is probably too long, but still there's a lot to unpack, so sitting through isn't a drag, and it has some of their most intense and beautiful songs to date.

I know I'd likely get castrated in real life for saying this amongst a Converge chat circle, but I'm a firm believer that this is better than Jane Doe. I say that mainly cuz they got their shit together in making their longer, more droning songs actually worthwhile and immensely enjoyable (A Glacial Pace, Coral Blue, AWLWLB). Makes the album flow so, so well which is essential for a 17-track release.

depends if by converge chat circle u mean mainstreamers who circlejerk over jane doe and havent listened to any other mathcore, or actual knowledgeable enthusiasts.
sadly i havent heard this nearly as many times as i want to, but i can definitely see the potential for this to be the case
