Colt stepped outside
It felt good to be alone
He wished he was drunk
He thought about something he just said
And how stupid it had sounded
He really should forget about it

i have never in my life heard a more dry and uninspired vocal performance and the guitarist is not much better. this sounds like something BCNR would make when they were 15

the “13 year old annoying everyone in Guitar Center” guitar sound does not save that one. I seriously don’t understand the vocals on this, what about them appeals to you guys

Washer actually has some decent guitar, Nosferatu has possibly some of the worst ever

no but like, what specifically about this stands out as good songwriting or dynamics etc. this is the 27th highest rated album of all time on RYM and I will listen to it at least a couple more times trying to figure it out, but I need help

Ok I maybe shouldn’t have stated songwriting first because not all of this stands out for songwriting per se (whatever is meant by that) BUT “Washer” in particular I think is a masterpiece of songwriting, some of these songs have goofy high school poetry tier lyrics (though that’s part of the charm) but those ones are great, the way the spidery riff weaves and ebbs in intensity to build the atmosphere and those partial climaxes before the big climax, it’s about as well-paced a “long song” as I’ve ever heard and clearly was a blueprint for tons of slowcore and crescendo-core post-rock. If you don’t dig that kind of thing that’s personal preference but it clearly does it well.

And agree there’s a certain “lightning in a bottle” youthful anxiety captured here incredibly well.
