Sleep Token is actually just the natural evolution of the Black Malachite project. Snide is a genius.

It’s funny Issues got brought up cause I’ve literally thought this whole time, “Issues and Volumes and bands like that are way worse and more derivative bull shit than this” and people seem to like them alright

Yes I also see the irony of saying “Sleep Token is slightly better than dogshit”. Low bar. I just find the disdain for this impressive and confounding

volumes are 1000000 times better then this band will ever be. thats a spicy take NASH!

i give volumes a pass because they are a lot heavier, more rhythmically interesting, have way more pretty textural stuff and ambience going on, and have significantly better vocals
i dont really blame anyone for thinking theyre derivative in general but the execution is signiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiificantly better imo. like incomparably so. i also dont think theyve ever gone for what this album is anyway

Oh def completely different lanes, those are just two bands that always stood out to me as “riding the genre tropes” and nothing more

Issues yes, volumes I don't see in that category. Maybe their latest album a bit more so but no where near what Sleep Token have done here.

I’ve always found both so gd boring

"And have significantly better vocals" - the band that had Gus mid range moaning like a chain smoking ogre for most of their albums? Haha.
The reality is that people like Volumes because they scweeeeem, while Sleep Token--with their infinitely higher volume (pun intended) of pop hooks and a few trap beats--exist as a landmine to purists who can't handle the thought of their precious metal music appealing to people who have a tinge of normie in them.

barr > myke >>>> gus > vessel
barr is good enough that gus has never mattered tbh, but that barr/terry combo is workin wonders

Gus > Vessel is definitely a contender for the whackest take in history

have you heard vessel sing past the first ep lmao
id listen to gus's vomit vocals for a month straight rather than suffer through vessels horrid inflections on this album again. proves that range stops mattering if your timbre is that bad

Yeah vessel doesn’t bother me as much as others but I get it if he bothers you haha. Not surprised people really dislike him

For sure man, his voice isn't for everyone, but I cannot in good conscience stand for the most carried vocalist in metal being ranked higher. It is unjust.

tbh i think his voice on the first ep is a lot better, which leads me to think all the stuff i dislike about his voice is just put on for dramatic effect, which makes his performance here *significantly worse* for me. gus at least has no other option but vessel actively kneecaps his own abilities
