heritage > watershed > pale comm > sorceress

unfortunately the new album is the lowest point in their career for me.

This is way better than the 3 that came after. [2]

"heritage > watershed > pale comm > sorceress"

I may come around to this order as PC and Sorceress are really close for me. I think I ended up giving Sorceress the edge due to the second half being considerably better than I was expecting after the horrid first half.

Listened to this after a long time recently. Don't know what the hell was wrong with me when I criticised Axe's drumming. His performance is great. Not stiff at all. Songwriting isn't adventurous though, except for parts like that amazing funky section on Lotus Eater

And this is one of Opeth's best produced/mixed albums. A metal album with a spacious and breathable mix is such a rarity nowadays

Lotus Eater is special to me. Played the song for a musician friend and he was completely floored by its amazingness.

Axe's drumming on here is great but it's got nothing on his performance on Heritage where he really came into his own.

I'd say about half of this album is pretty adventurous and interesting while the other half is pretty dull.

Don't get me wrong I do like this album. It's a weird one in that it feels like it had the potential to be one of my favourite Opeth albums. Some of the stuff on here is top tier Opeth (the first 3 tracks + Hessian Peel) and the overall atmosphere is really strong. It's the softer tracks (bar Coil) where it falls short for me, which I find really strange given where this album sits in their discography and the transitional stage they were going through.

This is definitely not very cohesive as an album but the songs are so good I don't really care tbh.
