"but if the drummer sucks it's really hard for any band to pick up that slack"
this. ive seen so many examples of this being a thing, especially in local music. there's a houston dm band that had one of the worst drummers ive ever heard, dude literally could not keep tempo to save his mother. they were blacklisted from playing at a lot of venues due to how much they sucked. they fired that drummer and got one of the better ones in the scene. a year later, they're now opening for like Immolation. one member changed them overnight.
my band nearly lost our drummer this summer and literally cried bc i knew we wouldn't find a drummer better than him where i lived, also bc he is a very good friend. luckily we saved him from leaving. he's the best drummer in our whole city as far as i know. we would be dogshit without him.

Dude thats how the last ossuarium LP is in a nutshell for me. If the drummer can’t hack it the whole thing sounds sloppy. It’s also why getting into seven churches took me forever.

there’s also a very big difference between “loose” and “sloppy”
this is loose playing but definitely still massively talented and in time.

ya lots of folks who dont understand the nuance of the true music will say sloppy means "doesnt sound like portnoy"
true brutal for the non-posers but tbh some posers do dig this one, it has mass appeal like thriller :D

there’s def some special sauce on this album because more than a few times I’ve encountered people who seemingly have little patience for extreme metal who still love this album.
never been able to quite pinpoint why but it is a thing.

knew a few deathcore kids who really liked this album. has some proto-deathcore elements, like that breakdown in "grave of the fathers". one of the best dm moments of all time

Some horrific Flo opinions on the last page god damn
Flo was a damn pioneer and most of these 5s would be 4 or less without his performance here
Also, some sick backing vocals

^Indeed. Flo was a crucially important drummer for metal.
He was to Death Metal what Neil Peart was to Rock.

Flo did this all natural though. No click, no sampling/triggering (as far as I can tell), and possibly one take all the way through. A lot of these wussy tech death drummers today probably wouldn't sound this solid if they recorded their albums in the same stripped down manner. Not to say there aren't also plenty of beastly tech death drummers that rip as hard or harder than Flo though
