I dunno, I think a lot of people would call plenty of songs by those bands heavy if they don't listen to this type of music. It's not exactly Ed Sheeran.

AiC and Soundgarden were definitely both considered metal bands early on. The only difference being that SG mellowed a bit over time, while AiC got heavier.

Nirvana, Soundgarden & STP all have songs I'd say could at least hold a candle to some of this in terms of heaviness - Pearl Jam i dunno though, they've always kind of seemed like the grunge Dave Matthew Bands to me

AiC were definitely the heaviest/most metal of the scene. Soundgarden was metal-ish, but more in the vein of Zeppelin, Sabbath etc doom metal. I never considered Nirvana to be metal at all, the heaviness of their sound (when it was heavy) is derived from the punk sound.

Uhh that's pretty much what every single critic and fan said about In Utero when it came out though? That album and most of Bleach are way fuckin' heavy dude. Heavy as anything AIC or Soundgarden, the two most "metal" of the big grunge bands did.
