Minidiscs mostly solved both issues. But minidiscs were annoying and an evolutionary dead end. So bad.

i had a minidisc player in high school. i thought it was the coolest thing. everyone else had mp3s at the time, and i think the ipod shuffle had just come out, but i could store a lot of songs on 1 mini disc. it was a cool novelty and everyone always asked me about it since no one else had one
