They've been hyping the hell outta this new one for ages now, the more a band does that and holds off on material always worries me.

Yup. I’m actually starting to worry it won’t come out until early 2020, but maybe I’m just getting nervous lol. So damn hyped to hear new material— I’m really wondering where they take their sound with this next one.

Could easily be a continuation of this, which I really don't want.

Album has a few great cuts but is so safe for Deftones.

Agreed. I think it’ll be way different actually. They know this didn’t go over really well (just look how quickly they cut pretty much all Gore songs from the set list). I really think the next one will blow us away, a comeback of sorts like Diamond Eyes.

Fingers crossed.

Yeah that’s the speculation due to Steph not being down with the softer direction. I think I read awhile ago Chino saying Steph would be more involved with the writing process on this one.

Melodic Deftones over heavy any day for me.

I could get behind a KNY Pt. II.

it doesn't really matter if deftones go harder or softer, as long as it's actually memorable then cool

which was part of gore's issue

Yeah, he said that he was taking a step back from writing to let Steph and Abe go bananas.

I gave it a 4.5 because it's Deftones, but it objectively is a solid 4, I think. Production/mixing undermined the whole thing, but I mostly listen to it on vinyl or with a nice pair of quality headphones and it sounds okay.

I'd love to hear this on vinyl. Bet that is why you've 4.5'd.

Yeah, quality goes way up on vinyl+quality speakers. It's still a bit murky, but way better than the CD/streaming platforms mix.

don't think i've ever rated an album higher because of the vinyl quality

when a vinyl listen makes me bond with an album more that holds for the digital version as well. same rating for both

Chino: “That’s why it’s hard to answer the question about the future and what comes next. But if anything I would say that [I’m reminded of] White Pony, that record in general, because it was probably us at our most experimental.”

Drum solos incoming. Would love to hear Abe showing his skills and finally take a step forward from the "always perfectly complementing the others"-drummer

and for vinyl: I wouldn't say the quality always goes up on vinyl. It's just different because you need to mix/master in a whole different way due to technical stuff. From what I've experienced (especially with TDEP), I would say that the instruments are more distinctive on vinyl. That can be good or bad, depending on what you like or what the album is supposed to sound like. Sometimes it is better for the instrumentals to merge in a thick layer of sound. Sometimes it is awesome to hear every instrument on its own.

I'm hoping for the new album to be kind of a KNY meets WP ordeal. Balancing the heavy with that intoxicating melody they do so good. Maybe get some Elites and Hexagrams/Rocket Skates/Entombeds in there for Abe's sake. But then balance it out with some Knife Partys/Hole in the Earths/Teenagers/etc.

Spot on. I do think that this record benefits from that, quite a lot. It's produced in a kind of murky, lo-fi manner that affects the performances in a negative way. The vinyl version gives the instruments a lot more space and everything sounds clearer.
