maiden does write long songs but i wouldn't really consider them relevant in the same way, i love classic maiden but they are kind of a rehash at this point, and i know a lot of people will hate on that but feel like even though their current output is still of pretty good quality, it isn't really interesting and is pretty much the band still rehashing the glory days, which isn't mean to be a knock on them because maiden are legends, but tool doesn't feel over the hill yet, despite being pretty old at this point. i don't know if they still bring in any new fans, or if its just because they haven't put out as many albums, but they haven't descended into that "later era" that every band from the 60s/70s that's still going has found themselves in, where they are just putting out shit to tour behind but nobody even expects it to hold a candle to their prime material.
totally get how some people would absolutely hate this record but as far as being a tool record i think it is pretty tight, although it doesn't have the intensity or excitement of their earlier work.

Nothing on this is tight, everything is drawn out.
That's the whole point too I guess.

>This is just a super long drum demo tbh
And such a good one. If the music gets boring, there's always that madman grooving underneath.

It's great agreed. Still waiting for a new batch of physical releases!!!

The transition at 2:14 on Invincible slays me every time. Full body chills.

I don't know what's going on in their personal lives, but I feel that this could be a great warm up album if they kept being productive.

Maynard's talked about their relationship on JRE, for this album they've basically had the odd 'meeting' and struggle to agree on anything during said meetings.
Apart from that they lead busy lives with families and other art / entrepreneurial projects.
I don't see them sitting down in a studio together for enough time to blurt out a cohesive masterpiece at this point in their lives. I hope I'm wrong though.

I saw that snippet. You can tell he's got a lot of respect for the other guys, though. No pointed fingers or name-dropping. It just is what it is, and he's alright with that.

"And such a good one. If the music gets boring, there's always that madman grooving underneath."
I mean it's some of the best drumming I've heard for sure, but everything else is just so boring about the album. My rating is literally carried by the quality of the drumwork.

It's definitely not boring musically, only problem with this album is the realities of time and age

This is an honest album, if anything. There's pretty much zero manipulation in this. That flurry of insight and passion has mellowed out to what this is. Closer to death. That doesn't have to be a lesser thing either, but so many still want loud noises.

I think this could have benefitted from some shorter songs being included instead of all of them being super long. The interludes aren't enough to break things up.
|

The interludes are way too much. Very unwelcome. Glad they didn't fit on the physical version.

The interludes are fine here tbh. Not nearly as intrusive as some of the ones on Aenima or 10,000 Days

It's still my AOTY. And will be. Hype in new Leprous album is low. Maybe Swans...
But it's gonna be almost imposible to beat this beast. I love the evolution from 10k days. More mature and sofisticated. A different approach to Tools sound.
