“Originally they said the album was going to be way heavier than SNW.“
Supposedly this is where the Gore followup is headed - me thinks Steph was getting pissy with the chill direction.

The interviews of the Gore era clearly indicate that, so yeah.
I'm honestly more for atmospheric, brooding or dark than outright heavy, but let's see

Preach. Moody Chilltones soothes so much.
Time to listen to some Crosses I guess....

Stephen was pretty vocal about not liking the band's softer direction. Hopefully we get something as heavy as the Self-titled or ATF.

I agree with Chilltones being great. A lot of their best songs are on the softer side, but a heavier change in direction would be refreshing. They'll always a few softies in the tracklist.

Chinos new(ish) solo track sounds pretty much like an AtF track so I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s something more like that

This is not a good album at all. Only Deftones I never come back to

I wish he'd make more solo albums. The AiC reunion stuff hasnt done much for me

This is def a good album. Very good actually— it’s just not quite up to the Deftones high standard they’ve set for themselves. Hard to say for sure, but I’d probably rate this more like a 4 if it was some debut album by a new band. But for Deftones standards — 3.5.
Hearts/Wires and P Bride are among their best songs. L(MIRL) is amazing too.

Have you heard Setting Sun source?
It was a one off for some DC comics spinoff (chino actually did one too along with one of the mastodon guys, don’t remember which).
Honestly one of his best tracks. I really love the new AIC material, and as much as I like Sean, Mike, and William as musicians, I just think Jerry needs a backing band that will do more of the leg work. He’s basically been the sole songwriter in the band for the last decade, and most of the band’s career tbh

Really bad production and some highly questionable song inclusions (wtf where they thinking with Geometric Headdress?!) are what make this album stick out as a sore thumb in the Deftones discog

Aw dude I love Geometric Headdress
Pittura and Xenon are the two weak links for me here

why bad production? I mean, yeah, the production of DE etc was better...but it is still good compared to so many other bands

Drums are drowned out af, Chino sounds like he's 20 metres away from the mic (and not in a good shoegazey way), muddy guitars... even Adrenaline sounds better production wise
If we're comparing the production with obscure black metal bands who record with a potato, then it would sound decent in comparision
The reason i have this at 3,5 is because i love H/W, Phantom Bride, Gore, Rubicon and Doomed User
