I think The Great Gig in the Sky might be the most beautiful piece of music I've ever heard; I'm not exaggerating that in the slightest. The storm they bottled actually does transcend words. The story behind how it came to be, the simple audio sample that sets the scene, Wright's best piano work guiding you along, the passion behind that beautiful girl's voice, the idea that this siren's call is one of death, that she's beckoning you into a fiery and welcoming end of your insanity. The sheer power the last few chords bring as they fade out as with the first side's final breaths...

I really needed to just get that out there, people are way too quick to dismiss the shorter tracks off this

It just makes me love Wright even more and then makes me more sad about the sheer amount of bullshit he put up with

one of the reasons this is my favorite Floyd is because wright turns everything he touches into gold

What always weirded me out was like it's a concept album about Rick's wife's depression

and yet the lyrics are credited to Anthony Moore

like, he did he call up Anthony and say "hey you wanna write lyrics for this album about an extremely personal issue my wife has?" just does not seem like the sort of thing you pass on to someone else to write no matter how close he and Tony were

nevertheless it's a superlative album and one of these days (I'm gonna cut you into little pieces) I'm gonna review it

The shorter ones definitely do need more love. The Great Gig in the Sky and Brain Damage/Eclipse are easily

top 10 Pink Floyd songs for me. Well, you know, there's still Time and Us and Them which are masterpieces,

but Money is probably weaker than everything else in here in my opinion.

lol holy shit rowan dude what did you pop today?! but admittedly the concept went right over my head... but thats definitely a strange situation. I swear every member of floyd is diabolical so it might be a joke? but like thats a pretty big fuck you to your wife unless shes in on it idk but now you got me jamming one of these days

I don't see what's so hard to believe about that paragraph I wrote lol

It's just considering how dark and introspective Broken China is I sincerely doubt even the most diabolical person would think it funny

And Wright always seemed like the "nice guy" of the group anyway

Maybe the lyrics are incorrectly attributed to Moore and they were actually all Rick's (or maybe Moore just contributed a couple of lines here and there) because I seriously can't think of any other way it makes sense

and agreed re: Great Gig and Brain Damage/Eclipse but let's be real On the Run is just not a good song

eh maybe the ridiculously comprehensive final i took this afternoon fried my brain, but you sounded off your rocker when i read it lol especially with that satanic floyd pun thrown in there

On the Run is great though i actually really like that song... I swear if Speak to Me through Time were one song (which would totally work if you think about it, with the reprise and everything) people would accept the ambiance in the beginning of the album so much more, at least with this site's opinion on this having too much filler

It's genuinely something that concerns me whenever I listen to that album but maybe I am off my rocker agreed. That video of Breakthrough with Wright performing live with Gilmour is still one of my favourite things ever though

On the Run is just a minute too long, although it would work better as one song agreed, then I wouldn't be able to skip the first minute of Time as easily :D in all honestly the Flips did On the Run better than Floyd did

they funkified it and gave it a real solid groove to keep it going for it's runtime

the Floyd one just sort of meanders for a while until they're like "oh we should segue into Time now maybe"

also fuck Sputnik for just erasing my comment and making me type it twice now that winky eye looks very suspicious up there

i really cant argue with that, something about on the run actually sticks with me though... the peaks of the ambient noises still make me feel high as hell even after the ridiculous number of spins i've given this

flips have a bad habit of covering albums that I already really, really, really like so that coupled with me not liking most of their newer stuff for whatever reason makes me biased as hell going into them.
