I thought the expectations when this album was released were not as high as the self titled, yet I think this is a strong contender with white pony

I think the shift in overall sound really divided a lot fans back when SNW first dropped, too many missed the "heavy sound" or the slight nu-metal leanings they used to have.
If this album would've came out after KNY, Gore, or even DE, i think the reception would've been a lot warmer.

I wasn't put off by any shifts in the sound of the band itself so much as the obvious sheen on the overall mix, which wasn't really present on the past few records
still though, once I got over that I was able to appreciate how good some of the songs were

often can't decide if this is my favourite Deftones LP or if that title belongs to Koi. i just love the flow of this album, feels so coherent, all the songs flow into one another seamlessly with no need for little transitions. i even enjoy pink cellphone, genuinely, one of my favourite Deftones tracks. the part at the end about butt fucking is dumb, but clearly a spontaneous joke, i realised how much i loved this album when i heard it start to finish for the first time and pink cellphone flowed into combat, which is my favourite track on the album. made me appreciate it in a whole new way.

Nah Koi is better than this

nah koi is pretty inconsistent tbh, aside from goon squad most of the even number tracks are considerably worse than all the others
It’s like 4/5, 3/5, 4/5, 3/5, 4/5, 3/5, etc until the last three songs. Where the only sub par cut on here is rapture

Maybe one day we'll get that last lost album with Chi, "Eros". Do y'all remember when Chino put ONE song out from it?

"Do y'all remember when Chino put ONE song out from it?"
There's actually a couple of the songs from it on YouTube, most of them are bootleg live recordings though. Smile is still available, and there's a cleaned up version of Dallas somewhere that might legitimately be one of their best songs, its beautiful, sounds a lot like the stuff on Koi No Yokan and this record. Really hope they release Eros at some point, from the couple of tracks on youtube, I reckon it could easily beaten Diamond Eyes in terms of rating.

np bro, it doesn't have any vocals it's purely an instrumental, but it is damn good. Onion I couldn't say for sure until I hear it, I think DE and KNY are two of Deftones best works, Gore is fantastic too but it's taken me up til now to appreciate it more, on first listen I low key thought it sucked, now I can easily rank it higher than Adrenaline and their S/T

See diamond eyes and koi aren’t consistent all the way through for me (DE is solid up until track 8 and then loses me on the last three and koi is more killer song okay song killer song okay song etc) where this s/t and pony mostly hold my interest all the way through
