don't really get the heat tbh. there's so much here that echoes his early 00s era. not perfect, but mostly well-executed stuff.

I think thats my problem tbh. Its like 50 something year old Em is still rapping about the same shit as he was 25 years ago.

i totally get that criticism, but given the whole point is to bring himself from 25 years ago into the present day, i can overlook what people, rightfully i might add, see as stale. i dunno, i was never a fan of serious em; i always preferred his comedic, light-hearted side, and this delivers that in large amounts. it's fun as hell.

Yeah I can see both sides of the spectrum for sure. And like I said, I'm a HUGE Em fan. He just lost me with this one. I get the concept and all but its just cheesy to me. Admittedly though I haven't jammed any of his stuff in full since Recovery so I can't compare to his past few albums before this.

People that think this sounds like his early 2000s stuff are smoking some good crack. Yeah it's like his early 2000s songs if they were completely neutered and had a bunch of lame woke language sprinkled in.

"but given the whole point is to bring himself from 25 years ago into the present day"

Is that the point though? Because he kind of tries to play it like the point is to critique and "kill off" that part of him from 25 years ago and instead spends more of the record just letting it run loose while he just kind of shakes his head for plausible deniabiliity. And like Dale said, even when he let's it run loose its just kind of garbage for the most part

out of all the albums released in the last three months its pretty funny that THIS is the album that knocked ttpd out of the billboard #1 spot only a week or so before breaking stevie wonder's record for most consecutive weeks at #1

I think this is easily his best album in 20 years

Well yeah, that's the point of bringing the alter ego back. It’s no good bringing him back if he’s not going to let loose on it lol. From my point of view though, it’s to what degree does he go to? Like I said in previous posts and touched on in the review - the point of the album is to highlight that he's outgrown that exaggerated version of himself. So there was two ways in which he could have approached the album. He could have either spent the time making a more serious critique, condemning and deconstructing the character, or he could have gone all in and embraced the character one last time before ending him for good. After spending more time with the album, what I think we get is something in the middle. It would be a cop out to not make an album where Slim Shady gets to stretch out, but it’s also clear Eminem is fully aware of the political climate and capitulates somewhat by bringing back a cira 2004 Slim that rips through the classics like Jenner and Reeves, rather than focusing on contemporary figures as it’ll blunt the contention (I surmise). This could reflect and support the fact he is removed from this persona and doesn't want to be that guy anymore; maybe it's down to caring about the blowback and/or his image; or maybe he's just too old and just doesn't have the energy to diss a load of new people in case it results in more MGK incidents. Maybe it's a bit of all of it.

You could say Em was just looking for some easy money, so brought back the character that made him big. I’m inclined to agree with that, given that his last couple of albums have been middling at best, with the worst album of his career preceding those records. I also agree with most people’s critiques about him not going in hard enough on either side of the spectrum and coming across a little disingenuous. However, overall, I think the album is well put together and is fun to listen to. I also stand firm that the actual narrative is well-done and intriguing – the problem is that it ends with “Guilty Conscience 2”, which is track 13 of a 19 track record. I love “Tobey”, but I would have happily seen anything after “Guilty Conscience 2” dropped to serve the purpose of the record.

Feels weird defending Em when I've not really liked anything of his since TES, but he got a lot right here. It's still far from perfect, but for the first 13 tracks, he minimises his cringe proclivities and produces some solid flows and beats with a bit of humour attached to it all. Plus, the record isn't laced in the same kind of stomach-turning nostalgia bait TMMLP2 was.

Yeah like all recent Em, this album could use some editing

I can't think of a single EM album that couldn't have used some editing, dropping a couple of tracks. It just varies how many those tracks are from album to album.

I’m bias towards MMLP (outside of those fucking skits) but other than that I agree

Although SSLP and Eminem Show are pretty much fine as is as well imo

I think SSLP and MMLP have very minor pacing issues, but the songwriting is so damn strong I can overlook it. But yeah, I don’t understand why he keeps making 19 track albums when he is well past his prime.

I would love to see em collaborated with the bass brothers again, I think it would greatly benefit him.

I think em makes stuff he enjoys making, it's just that people who enjoyed his earlier style but not his current style don't vibe with it.

Stating the obvious, obviously, but still

Damn, Eminem hasn’t gotten an album above a 3.1 average rating on here since 2002.
