Daft Punk would probably sound better to my ears with less vocoder. My most controversial dance music opinion is that I find them mid

Yea, I am with Lucca. But IA is gonna replace singers anyway, right? Nothing to worry about

Well Daft Punk is a bad example because that REALLY goes with their sound specifically
But not everyone is going for Blade Runner soundtrack band

Exactly! Because Daft Punk also pretended to be RoBoTs.

Yeah, but Charli is doing the same thing. We have nearly two decades of going for that messy MySpace pop sounds that Millionaires and Kreyshawn kinda pioneered. It's absolutely intentional to have that overproduced detachment, that's a large component as to how Charli has been such a trailblazer within the hyperpop movement. A song like Tears off POP2 lives and dies by the vocal effects

I don’t have a problem with autotune in general, in fact I’d prefer a greater emphasis on exaggerated vocal effects. I’m just hearing fairly standard / mild alterations to me, and yeah it sounds bland. Her voice is completely uninteresting

Track 10 without the autotune wouldn't be as good

Odal I saw your comment responding to me about her touring history, specifically with Sleigh Bells. Super interesting. I think some people might be more receptive to this if they looked at this album through the same lens that they’d have when evaluating a Sleigh Bells album
Sympathy of a Knife sounds a LOT like SWEET75 and Locust Laced imo (and other older SB songs)

For the record I enjoy Sleigh Bells far more than I do Charli xcx, but the overlap in sound leaves this in the “enjoyable” category for me

oh my people really complaining about the auto tune here? thats funny as fuck.

That's a good point Tgreen.
I love me some Sleigh Bells and do think that Charli carried a lot of their blown-out sound with stuff like Vroom Vroom, being unafraid to be loud and obnoxious. There's definitely a lot of plot points on the timeline between "I Love It" and this that would make some folks appreciate this more

I’d really like to hear an instrumental version of this.
Distorting her voice can be analyzed through the lens of postmodernism, but it’s hard to believe that this alienating effect is alluring to such crowds. It obviously has a very elementary/instinctive effect, which, when combined with her overexaggerated (and very much human-like) sexy image, triggers cognitive/affective dissonance in a rewarding way for some, and aversive way for others.

In my humble opinion you’re over analyzing tf out of the vocal production choices lol

its shockingly amazing how simple the answer is to why she uses auto tune. People just so caught up in the whirlwind against Charli they will TRY ANYTHING

yeah, there's a lot to mine from this album if you want but honestly every single that I could gush about ladders back up to "heh, that sounds nice"
It ain't gotta be deep

I definitely get some Magdalena Bay vibes when listening to this as well, though more if a hyper pop approach to that sound. I think it works well
