P sure I can count the number of albums I've insta 4.5'd (or higher) in the last 3-4 years with my fingers
but it's an indecently good list, so no regrets or reforming the method hm

"Death With Dignity, Fourth of July, The Only Thing, No Shade In The Shadow of the Cross, and Blue Bucket of Gold are my 5/5 tracks from C&L."
Nice, we have the same favorites

I mean really nothing on this touches anything on C&L for my money. Shit Talk comes close. And the holistic experience of C&L is just something else. This to me has loads of lovely individual moments but doesn’t present as the same, complete artistic/personal statement. I’ve not dug thaaaaat much into the lyrics yet so we’ll see I may be being dumb.

Aesthetically I find this is perhaps most similar to some of his Christmas stuff, especially with the choir vocals.

Actually tho? I do not find this similar to his Christmas stuff. Most similar to C&L but ofc C&L is the better album

Maybe it's because I've always associated Stevens with Christmas to some degree because of his xmas albums, or maybe I'm just weird, but all Sufjan music feels like winter seasonal music to me. I jam Impossible Soul every Christmas eve and it makes no sense.

Sufjan is very much a fall/winter artist for me (of course I still listen year round) but there's just a vibe to his albums where I just associate my listens to those times of year

I'm still enjoying this very much but it's yet to reveal itself as anything more than an extremely solid mid-tier Sufjan album. I'd probably only include Shit Talk in a top 20 all-time Sufjan list.

mid tier = 4?

if most of his albums are 5s for that user then thats mid tier
(i havent looked at his ratings just guessing)

Mid-tier for Sufjan is pretty high quality to be honest, but I'd have it challenging Adz for 5 behind Illinois, The Ascension, C&L, and Planetarium.

His best is one of the state albums, can’t decide which.

Does Sufjan have some pitch correction running on his vocals here. There's a strange, subtle autotune-like quality to his voice on here

@Reefa i’ve honestly always heard that a little bit in Sufjan’s voice, I think he has a very unique voice timbre that almost makes it sound laden in effects when it’s not… but i’m sure there’s some extra processing on his voice here either way
