Enjoyed this one but I also enjoyed City Burials a lot and I don't really think this is better other than having some more tracks that feel like bangers out of the gate rather than needing a moment to grow.
Feel like every album since Dead End Kings has sat in a pretty similar place for me although Fall of Hearts sits slightly elevated for me, too many stellar riffs on that album and shit like Last Song Before the Fade really makes my butthole clench.
Anyway this album sounds like Katatonia and I love it.
Also (prepared to be roasted for this) I started with TGCD and NITND and adore both of those albums, anything before that I can't seem to get into purely because the singing sounds so dogshit. Even Viva Emptiness just idk, the overall quality is so pooey to me it kills my enjoyment, so I've never been able to feel the love for that and Last Fair Deal everyone seems to have. I do love The Ocean and Disillusion though

just get into enka singing and over yourself when approaching conventionally "bad" vocals. they add something a perfectly sung line can't provide.

There are rough vocals that I thoroughly enjoy, I think it depends on the style for me and it might have to do with the fact that I got into Katatonia later in their career and what I came to love about/look for in their sound is that really crisp clean production with Jonas' smooth buttery vocals perfectly mixed. Something about the way those early records sound really takes me out of it, even though the idea of this band but heavier/drearier sounds fantastic to me.

The singing on LFDGD is emotive and great

It's like....comically bad to me. i just went back and tried because it's been a while and I wasn't sure if I'd feel differently but wow.
There's plenty of albums/artists where the vocals aren't my favorite but I deal because they work well enough with the music but they're WAY out front here while also being wobbly and weak and out of tune as fuck. I'm really glad he's improved A LOT and I love this band now but these vocals are pure shit. I'd rather listen to my butt cheeks slap together for 13 hours than this version of Jonas sing literally anything.

"You're not wrong, but it's impossible to have a serious conversation with that username "
Skill issue.
You can be as emotive if you want, if your singing is dogshit and out of tune I don't wanna hear it. Honestly tho I'm sure those albums are great and I wish I could enjoy them, I'd fully support like a re-recorded or live studio version of any of those although I'm sure trve kvlt fans would hate.

yeah we would because the singing is an essential part of their vibe and why we love them.

He'd need to make a new account for that at this point I've been trying to switch this name for months and meds aren't making name changes anymore. Believe me they just delete your comment without doing anything when you ask.

@Shape I don't really get how you loved TGCD and TNITND but don't feel similarly about this. This feels like a belated end to a trilogy. DEK was great too, but this is too

I'm fond of Viva Emptiness, you should try the remixed remastered version, you might like it more. It even has some new parts which is pretty cool

Both versions of Viva Emptiness are meh at best. Worst Katatonia record alongside DEK.

Oh I don't think TGCD or NITND are miles above this or anything, I mostly just prefer those because they were my first and I've been listening to them the longest. I think every album they've released since TGCD sits between a 4-4.5 for me. Dead End Kings took the longest to grow on me but I love it now. I just really enjoy their sound....when Jonas can sing.

Too bad that with the singing along came the monotony. That doesn't apply to all the songs from TGCD onwards ofc, but to my ears his voice has lost some of the color that made LFDGD and Discouraged Ones so great.
But yeah I'm based also since I started listening these guys with those albums, along with TD.
