I fully understand not liking this. But 1.0 seems extreme to me. Maybe I perceive ratings differently.

A one is literally just butthurt DSO fans mad that this is a little closer to old school black metal than the proggy batshit stuff they usually put out. Don’t get me wrong, I was kinda disappointed too, but this is absolutely not bad at all.

I’ll die on that hill tbh

I’m not a big enough DSO fan to be ‘butthurt’, this is just a diluted and mundane example of unconvincing BM regardless of who’s name is behind it…

then again, I do usually prefer my BM dissonant, proggy or with other ‘foreign’ influences

There’s ‘old school’ BM that wipes the floor with this, that isn’t the problem. I genuinely can’t recall a band having such a steep decline in quality and Furnaces isn’t good, either. Kenose, in terms of quality and execution, may as well be a completely different band.

This isn't (and never was) a "bad" album taken purely at face value; but it is disappointing in the context of DsO's discography. Which, to be fair, is a very high bar to clear. But hey, that's the downfall of having been so consistently great for so long 🤷‍♀️

Still lmaoing at all of you people who only consider the sonic sensuality of the music. The dread warnings of this album ring truer than they did when it was made.

sewer give me the cliff notes plz, I read the lyrics when it came out but I don’t remember any of them.

I mean honestly, like thematically or whatever, all of that kind of stuff never really meant much to me with this band. It’s always been second to me behind the insanely good songwriting. I remember this record being kinda nihilistic.

trilo, I cannot awaken you to a perception you do not directly perceive yourself. I can only point my finger and hope you notice that thing which is pointed at rather than the finger pointing. I'm sorry, but you're on your own. I'm not trying to make you think this is a *good* album in the sense that you think it's sensual and pleasant. I hammer this point again and again: this album is not about sonic sensuality in the way their old albums were. If you won't think about it beyond that, nothing will help you. This album is a warning. If you still, at this late hour, refuse to even try to reckon with it, what am I to say?

This definitely isn't as bad as people make it out to be. Think a lot of it has to do with the politics of the band
