I saw them live before ever hearing their albums and it was literally life-changing, but I'm sure I've ranted about that show enough on Sput over the years.

They are one of my favorite live bands, and have mastered the craft of atmosphere in live performance. It's absolutely hypnotic if you let yourself get absorbed by it.

admittedly, mine was outdoors under a full moon by candlelight, and I'd never been to a black metal show. it was more meditation than concert -- all haze and cedar smoke, long songs that drifted in and out of thunderous peaks and hypnotic dirges full of choirs and synthesizer swells. it felt like a ceremony, maybe a harvest ritual or an ancient funeral rite. nobody moved for the entire concert and I felt like I'd been inducted into some forgotten cult. if I could relive any show that'd be it.
