Best song is a tough one. Surely something from HB, probably the t/t for me especially if you include the beautiful instrumental The Cascades which it flows right into. Id say The Shrine/The Argument if not for that weird 1 minute of dissonant free jazz or whatever at the end which don’t sit right with me haha

Every time I listen to Helplessness Blues with my wife around, she's vibing through the full album and then that part comes on and she says "ugh, turn it off!". I don't hate it myself, but not my favorite.

@Sunny my wife does the same thing. She loves the whole album and then that part comes on and she wants me to shut the whole thing off lol.

The funniest recently is I was playing the end section of Sufjan’s ‘Goodbye Evergreen’ and the wife walked in the room and just said ‘please turn this off it’s awful’! I said ‘but you like Suffy Stevens usually, the album gets better’ and she just walked out the room
Her judgement is brutal with such things
I was also playing Wire ‘Pink Flag, two days ago but it’s half term so she’s at home and I’m wfh and she came in and just said ‘this would give me a headache while working’ and left the room again. Classic.

Make that three of us. Same thing with my wife. Lol. I don’t blame her, it’s pretty obnoxious

And actually, the more I listen to this, the more I realize there are a lot of songwriting similarities with Crack-Up. Cradling Mother is maybe the best example. It’s more sunny/positive feeling, but otherwise it would fit perfectly on CU. Quiet Air / Gioia is another great example.

I agree the longer songs on here are very Crack-Up, especially the amazing last third. I think maintaining that dense, more experimental side of the band was great even though apparently CU was maligned by some of the fanbase. I like they mix the ambitious qualities of that and HB with a more pop friendly, sunny folk sound, even if it could've been a bit shorter and maybe a slightly different track order. One of the best albums of the decade still.

Damn that’s great about Shrine, when I saw them I’m pretty sure they played the song but skipped that part

That sounds amazing, I’m jealous. I was supposed to see them back in June (would have been my first time) but I missed it because I…had the wrong date in my mind altogether. Missed it by one day

only song I really wanted that they didn't play was Quiet Air. still a fantastic show even for a filthy casual fan like myself. opened with Sunblind which was a bucket list live experience for me, very cool

Sounds like an incredible setlist. Sunblind as the opener with Sun Road --> HB as the closer is exactly how I'd pick it myself.
