It’s more relevant here than in most threads, just wanted to draw the comparison between attempting something new (and somewhat succeeding albeit with inconsistencies) or playing it safe. I’d prefer the latter every single time.

I think the reason you see FI as Lateralus b-sides is because you're a casual Tool fan because i can say the same thing about this album compared to the previous Opeth album since i'm not the biggest Opeth fan.

Other than the Gatorade track here (which is more jazzy than their usual stuff) i don't see how this album is experimental and different from the last one.

On the other hand as a pretty big Tool fan,FI doesn't sound like Lateralus to me and i can see some progression to their sound

I think it's easier to notice changes in the sound when you're a big fan of a band instead of a casual listener. Not sure if that makes any sense though

Sure, that’s true of course, but a lot of Tool fans were happy to admit it wasn’t exactly a great departure from their Lateralus sound. It wasn’t just the casuals who claimed it wasn’t anything different. A lot loved it regardless, because they love that sound, fair enough.

I will admit, I only brought up the comparison in the first place because of the low ratings from Tool, or more specifically FI fans. Just banter.

I'd say that Tool played it very safe with respect to the sound on FI. That is, very similar guitar riffs, lots of polyrhythms and tom work on drums etc. But they were very brave in what they did structurally and emotionally with that sound. I.e. a further departure away from writing rock songs, much more tender and atmospheric etc.

Agreed...tks for putting my thoughts in words.

Of course Tool kept their sound, because is the sound of Tool...its weird you guys don t think like that, but no other band could pull that off.

On this second listen here, I got severe Ghost vibes. Coming from a Ghost fan. Pretty neat. Still trying to go through the adventuring nature of this, but I see me bumping this.

Yeah anyway, my interest in Opeth is extremely casual so not feeling much incentive to return to this. Will probably give it one more go in Swedish. Glad so many fans are enjoying this though.

Like on Tool I can't agree with an average rating or below, that goes the same here...have no doubts in mind that this is consistent good music...weather you rate it higher or closer from the 3 its a matter of personal taste, or suiting you well at the time or not. Brilliant bands deserving all respect...sometimes us users prefer looking for somekind of self respect, or to be respected in the community, instead tho

New Tool is the safest comeback album of all time

Even the Perfect Circle was more risky than that

Maybe to your stubborn head doof...perhaps you should read what other users write and take something of value for a change f.e. Nightbringer.

That APC turned out cool over time.
