Yeah but Burzum outside of Tomhet still have a super harsh aesthetic due to production despite the music being basically just really chilled out mid tempo folk with distortion. Doesn't seem like anyone's saying BM can't be easy listening, just commenting on the idea that FoR's brand is, which I would agree with.

I feel like a lot of this band’s other albums are quite different than this stylistically tho. ALTDIRW is much more cavernous, desolate and depressing for example. The genre has a much broader aesthetic than people are giving it credit for is all I’m saying. obvs teasing about Burzum... I guess I just hate genre stereotypes

This. Memes about being lost in forests, sacrifices of goats/bandmates are really just over the top by now. Which covers most reasons why they're the memes they are.

to me bm is probably the best subgenre of metal for the sheer breadth and diversity of bands under its umbrella
I don't really care about genre beyond the surface but that's my observation anyway

Black metal has incorporated alot of different sounds and feelings into the mix (many of them on the softer side of things) since the beginning, it really isn't anything crazy.
I agree with Shadowmire that bm's diversity puts it above most metal genres, pretty much the opposite of what people see.

It just depends on what sort of atmosphere the band are going for.
Blackgaze for example is a lot more whimsical/magical sounding with more emphasis on melody rather than breakneck speed.

Gotta say this is growin on me, or maybe i'm just being brainwashed by the hype

So many intricacies appear.
When I first heard that melody about midways in Last Empty Tradition, I knew I wanted to get intimate with it. Then it turns out that theme actually continues most of the song. Brilliant.

Why does it matter if it's easy listening or not? It's the enjoyment factor that ultimately determines everything.
I'd take this over tootsy bs like Emperor or Dimmu any day.

What’s wrong with Emperor tho?

I just find them inherently boring, their stuff does nothing for me. Weird, considering black metal is my most-listened-to subgenre. Check my pie chart if you don't believe me.
As far as old-school bm is concerned, nothing holds a candle to Dissection, in my humble opinion.

Also, Yaknips, this is basically second-wave bm but with more leads. If you like WITTR, Saor, Fen or Winterfylleth, check this out. If Cascadian isn't your thing, then don't bother.

Heh, that easy listening comment really triggered people.
It's just another admission of not having heard this more than once.

I am just trying to figure out why an album being a straightforward listen is a bad thing.

Some people just think complex/inaccessible = good.
Pretty silly if you ask me.
