I almost feel like all I am going to get in 2.5 weeks is a 4 track ep of the B-cuts off Bodies haha

Yeah, this release has been bizarre. Isn't "Tied.." the last song on the album? I'd like to keep that a surprise. We only have 4 tracks left to be revealed. What's the point of waiting until the 11th to hear the last 4? Rise killed the hype by doing this type of release.

Haven't seen this since Green Day American Idiot but those singles came out after the album. Maybe Katy Perry or Taylor Swift did it...

yeah, i don't think 7 pre-release is common at all. Light, do you have any non-pop artist examples where it isn't some sort of double album?

Porter Robinson had like half his most recent release as singles prior to release, but again, that is an electronic more club type music. I can't think of any examples outside of the pop/electronic market.

If you look at Rise alone, they do this for most of their artists. I don't know about SEVEN out of eleven tracks for every artist but they definitely put out a good chunk of the album before it is released. I wouldn't differentiate between pop and non-pop artists though, Grey. Larger labels are treating every band like pop artists these days. I'm not exactly sure why they decided to put out Tied To A Tree now though. It doesn't follow the single/b-side format that they used for the first six tracks and it's so close to release already.

Just went and looked through the past year of Rise releases and their standard is definitely 4 singles for full LPs with AFI as the outlier:

Upcoming June 2021 spiritbox 4/12

Upcoming June 2021 covey 4/10

Upcoming June 2021 AFI 7/11

2021 Tilian 4/11

2020 knucklepuck 4/11

2020 Dance Gavin dance 4/13

But I did Find one interesting release from then in March of last year very similar to AFI. 5 singles releases dropped in 2 song increments leading up to acacia release. Only 2 songs remained by the time the album dropped.

2020 acacia strain 10/12

Also, rise releases eps like absolute jackasses releasing all but 1 or 2 tracks as singles.

we love the research, Feather *claps*

despite AFI being the outlier it does seem like this is more of a Rise issue

@Grey I agree,

4 singles is a bit much (should stick to 1,2 or 3 tops),

dropping all but 1 song on an ep prior to release is insane (should be just 1 or 2 out of 5 tracks)

Acacia Strain and AFI seem to be doing something different with A/B side vinyl 7-inch releases up until release, weird that AFI bucked the 2 track trend with their 7th single though. regardless, I don't like it 1 bit!

Rise has released a ton of Angels and Airwaves singles (5 or 6 so far?) and the album hasn't even been announced yet.

But this is the band's decision. Someone on the subreddit posted a quote from Jade where he said:

“Usually we wouldn't do that, releasing half the record ahead of time, but because we can't really do anything else we wanted to stretch out the release of the record so that there is something happening. Music releases are the only thing we really have any control over right now, so we decided to release it two songs at a time.”

Those 7-inch singles annoy me, honestly. It feels like such a cash grab. I mean, it's cool if it helps out AFI for another album, but it's still like - why? 7 inches made a lot more sense back in the day when an album drop was probably a lot further out, and likely the only way to hear the single was either on the radio, or if you had the 7 inch. The 7 inches were also released so close to the actual album release date that I saw zero reason to ever get one. Neat collectors items, but that's it.

I get Jade's response, but stretching out an album release just kills the hype. They should have released one or two singles, then dropped the album. Deftones did that with "Ohms" during the pandemic. Worked just fine for them.

I'll listen to the album when it drops, but the slow rollout really killed the hype for me. Didn't even pre-order a physical copy of the album because of this. At this point I just want to hear the entire album before I decide if I want to own it.

@Sconza thanks for giving us that quote.. I am not surprised. We were supposed to get this album last year, but I believe they paused it because they couldn't tour for it. At this point it seems a bit ridiculous. They could have dropped this one last year and made another album by now (for some reason The Mountain Goats come to mind, who just dropped their first single off their third album since COVID began)

How cool would it have been if AFI capitalized on the down time during the pandemic to release a bunch of their sweet B-Sides we know they have stocked up!

They've definitely been working on new stuff. Bodies was pretty much done before the pandemic even began. I wouldn't be surprised if we got an EP early next year or even an entirely new album in 2022. At the very least, there will probably be a smaller gap than usual between albums.

Maybe they’re doing this as a way to maximize profits? I mean each single released gets a limited vinyl pressing, ensuring each one will be sold out.

Idk just trying to understand their reasoning for this, they haven’t been able to tour so maybe this is them plus the label trying to get good sales out of all this..

I don't know why, but this band's b-sides tend to be much better than a lot of the songs that make it onto their albums proper. Would love to be in those meeting rooms deciding which songs get put onto the albums. I know there's some decision making by the label, or at least influence. I remember hearing Davey wanted one of the b-sides on DU, but the label wanted Miss Murder. Of course we know Miss Murder is AFIs biggest hit to date. I wonder where AFI would be if Miss Murder wasn't on DU, but was instead a b-side.

Miss murders chorus was throwaway lyrics that Davey just never replaced because he thought it was a throwaway track haha
