this eats Hell on Earth for breakfast, although that albums still goes hard af. This just transports the listener to the gritty street life of early 90's NYC ghettos like nothing else I've heard. a true classic.

I agree^ the way they say shit on this album is just so sincere and real. Atmosphere is dark as hell.

When I first heard this many years ago I actually didn't like it. I thought the beats were way too minimal

True^ wasn't a fan of a lot of the beats at first either. Now I think they all go hard af cuz it's just part of the album's atmosphere and style. Havoc is one of the goats.

As long as the lyrics, flow, and rhymes are substantial, then I don't have a problem with minimal beats.

"As long as the lyrics, flow, and rhymes are substantial, then I don't have a problem with minimal beats."

Yeah this is where I am now. That Dynospectrum album is another good example.

I'd much rather have amazing beats and basic lyrics then avg beats and exceptional lyricism.

Great, sure, but has some flaws, imo.

First, there are 20 minutes of disposable material here. The skits are the usual suspects, but I won't bitch too much about it, because it's a genre-wide problem, plus they are at least separate tracks. But Cradle To The Grave, Up North Trip and Party Over are filler pieces. The instrumentals are decent, but not up to par with best material here (which is, come to think about it, everything else) -they're your standard "raw" beats. And when these beats are not spectacular, they unveil the second problem of the album, which is...

The rapping/lyrical abilities of Havoc and Prodigy. Don't get me wrong, they both have some great verses/lines/moments here, but for the most part they're...good, not mindblowing. They both have solid voices and deliveries, but too often their flows and lyrical prowess doesn't amount to anything more than "they're nice, and they mean what they rap, but there's tons of better rappers out there". Without the astonishing production, this album wouldn't even be considered the landmark it is today. I mean, the best verses here, imo, are by Nas and Raekwon on "Eye For An Eye".
