"This record is really a Saint Anger-level disaster."
I wouldn't go that far, but it's pretty bad

"How would you say Tool's position differs from DEG? Are you referring to the fact DEG had to rush this album out quickly because of bad management?
I honestly have no idea what the Tool album will be like. I'm pretty sure it will be better than this, but whether it will measure up to 10,000 Days I don't know."
Yeah, they're pretty different circumstances. And given the length of time Tool have had to make this new album, I'd like to hope they've had a lot of moments to muse of what they're making. Insulated World doesn't have that luxury and comes across as if minimal thought was put into.

I agree that was probably excessive; Saint Anger is worse composition wise. It's just what came to mind when thinking about a disappointing album with terrible drum production.

Drum production has really gone to the shitter in the last few years. Makes you appreciate albums like Epidemic of Violence for getting metal drums right.

At least St Anger gave us Some Kind of Monster which is a great watch :/

@Calc So you actually rate this worse than St Anger? If you include your live experience, I'd say that's fair.
Brickwalling is rife in present day metal. It's the main reason I never cared about Fallujah.

It’s funny, I was listening to this yesterday on the way home from work, and I’m just so indifferent towards it. Horrible production aside, the songwriting is so goddamn derivative.

@DrGonzo I agree. The bad production would be forgivable if the songwriting was any good. I still love ...And Justice For All.

Yeah, it's really frustrating. When you put this on and then something like DSS, the difference in all aspects is night and day.

@Irony: Oh God no St. Anger itself is a disaster in pretty much every single way, this is much better because the first two songs + Aku bang plus I love the concept behind this and Kyo's lyrics. It's just that the execution and production are...less than stellar to be generous.
@Dr: Yeah this has their second-worst songwriting along with Macabre, not good. It's not even the fact that it's more back to basic Metalcore/Nu Metal, 5 Ugly which is has tons of that and Mode of Vulgar are some of my fav things the band ever did, it's just this the songs themselves are not up to standard. Shinya constantly resorting back the usual D-beat and the guitars being less inspired than usual really hurt this album.

Yeah man. I definitely feel repetition is the biggest crux here. I’m all for simple songwriting, but it’s the bad kind of repetition here

Also to add on to that point about St. Anger, despite this being evidently better I'd still enjoy that album more for two reasons. One is because St. Anger is so bad, so misguided and with the documentary to boot it's kinda so bad it's good. It's an event listening to it, hearing the snare in the intro to the t/t is one of the funniest moments in music. Secondly, it's far more enjoyable to have a crack at St. Anger then seeing my second favorite band release a dud and see their state become worse.
I wouldn't say repetition is the main problem, it's mainly the generic D beat/blegh chugs sections (Zetsuentai and Keigaku no Yoku are the absolute worst examples of this) or aimless/poor transitions (Values mid section, Empty Howls, Ranunculus). Plus Kyo can't do the monster vocal performance he used to be able to do to cover for sections which would be a problem now (like Decayed Crow).

New sukekiyo song (technically a demo version) from their next album that comes out in a few months.
https://youtu.be/dlr05OHAIDg
It sounds like... ambient industrial nu-metal? There are some electronic elements and Kyo uses his high pitched scream rapping like in Values of Madness. The mixing and vocal production sounds pretty bad unfortunately but hopefully it will sound more polished in the final version. I like it more than most of sukekiyo’s non-ballad songs.
I am getting a little tired of Kyo’s cat screeches though if I’m being honest. I mean they are cool but I miss when he used his growls more.

Also lol how is this comparable to St. Anger? The songwriting is less sophisticated and the production sucks but I can’t wrap my head around thinking this is anywhere near that bad. This is why I like to take breaks from Sputnik and decide whether I like something instead of checking Sputnik to see if I’m allowed to like it lol. Obviously everyone is entitled to their own opinion but I think this is objectively better than St. Anger.

I'm avoiding hearing any Sukekiyo until official trailers from the new album, pretty excited for it. Their demo/single stuff given at live shows is always worse production wise so it will be much nicer for the album. By the sounds of that description it's like shiryou no ariana which is great for me since I love the shit out of that.

Yeah it’s like a more structured and expanded version of that song. More melody but more heaviness at the same time.

Ooooo I'm hyped.
