Pre-album singles "No Tears Left to Cry" and "God Is a Woman", albeit excellent, aren't enough to carry this otherwise flat album in which Ariana Grande explores R&B as she'd never done before. Funnily enough, only the three pure pop songs were chosen as singles. The singer left 'Sweetener' no room to breathe as she moved on to the following album within two months and a half.

hmm maybe. it's a phoned in verse but I also feel like that song is really cool because of the unusual production (I like how it jumps into double-speed [or goes from half speed to its normal speed, w/e] during the verses)

pharrell uses the opposite trick on "successful" where the first half is one speed and then it drops to half speed and never goes back (which is cool: the tempo change is not motivated or defined by the chorus/verse divide as it is in "the light is coming"). pharrelllllllll
[not to mention how crisp and 4K everything sounds and how good the chord changes are (in particular with "successful," in particular with the part with the pulsing keyboards like "tonight I'm a baller babe")]. even the percussive breathing sounds in different ears hit the spot so good
