Probably not better than Daisy or TDAG. Initial impact was greater with those two albums, but as Sowing said, time will tell.

Absolutely fantastic review Sowing, as expected. Right now I'm gonna say it's number 3, behind TDAG and Daisy. I could see it overtaking daisy as time goes on, but I don't ever think it'll dethrone TDAG. That album has too many memories and strong emotions associated with it to be overtaken by really any album aside from a couple. Still, a fantastic record. 137, In The Water, and Desert are my favorites right now, but it seems to change every few listens.

I read a youtube comment where someone referred TDAG to the calm and Daisy the storm (which I guess would make this be the flood?
I always thought that was kind of cute despite TDAG being the calm is kinda weird. (OR IS IT IN REVERSE ORDER. IS THIS THE CALM AND DAISY THE STORM AND TDAG THE FLOOD WOW.)

137 is too perfect
|

reverse order of that would make much more sense tbh

I personally find the notion that this is as good as TDAGARIM silly.
It's a good record and not a let down at all, but it's not nowhere near godly (imho).
Maybe it will grow on me, but for now I find it less charming than both Leaked Demos and Daisy.
137 is amazing though and I love falling asleep to Batter up. It makes for a really nice lullaby.

First, thanks for the review! Honestly, I had been waiting for it, as I remember myself reading your text on TDAGARIM (I like the personal attachment to the band, which is probably inevitable when writing on BN, but nonetheless so scarcely seen amongst critics) and when this one came out, I decided to register on the forum and share my views on the album.
To move on from the eulogizing part of my comment, Ponton, would you repeat what that book was? I know, I sound like a fucking troglodyte but I honestly couldn't find it on the previous pages.
As for my perception of the album, I really like it. I agree that the opening track is the best of them all, they all however sound more or less equally good. Unlike most people here, I have not been growing up with BN, had no chance to see the gradual revolution in my persona and the corresponding changes in their music- and that's for the simple fact that I am, well, younger. hope that this album is an epiphany for myself, as I really can find the reflection of myself and my thoughts in the first few songs; and although my journey with BN is shorter, "I think I will be relieved when it's over".
Cutting off the personal part, I think that there are some really great lyrics in the album, some of them I will remember for a long time. I do not agree that it's seeming incoherence is a disadvantage. YFW was coherent af, and we all know what the maturity and quality of yfw was. Neither can I say that SF feels like bsides. I would say the contrary, that it's end-to-end genuine and ultimate expression of mindsets that have made Brand New exceptional for its entire history.
Scoot, thanks for recommendation, I am listening to them for the first time and the vibe is quite similar to the national, at times. Btw, cant wait for their new album.
And well, the rank looks: TDAGARIM>Deja>SF>Daisy>YFW

A lot of the acoustic stuff honestly sounds like bad Alice in Chains without Layne's bleatin' sheep vox to bail it out. A lot of Modest Mouse-y bits too, again without much inspiration or Brock's mania.
Has that horrible Staind forced-earnestness thing to my ears. The worst thing about the band are definitely the vocals.
