Steven's guitar tones have always been excellent, but the tones on this album sound so refreshing. There's a different rawness and character to both the rhythm and lead tones that makes them interesting. Steven's playing also seems less calculated and more spontaneous.

the guitar work on Same Asylum as Before really proves your words, man. Too bad the vocals kill it for me.

The only album of his that sounds calculated to me is Raven, and I still love it.
Myth fyi the deluxe version of this has an instrumental demo version of Asylum.

well, thanks, that might be nice to listen to. Seeing the guitar covers online, it seems like it's an enjoyable song to play.

I've always enjoyed Steven's vocals but this album is the first time I think his vocals hurt the music at times, Pariah being a prime example.
Steven's traversed a lot of musical landscapes over the years, but he does have his own sound that's recognisable, especially over the past few years. This album at times doesn't seem like music SW typically has been writing. I enjoy those moments the most. Asylum being a good example.
